after 244 years.I'm sure it's a surprise to some that they were still making them, but I know a few people this will actually depress.

On the one hand, it's kind of a pity that this legacy is ending, but at the same time, it's probably better for the environment.
The most terrifying bit of the article was ""The company has changed from a reference provider to an instructional solutions provider." Feels like newspeak.

Not surprising. They held out as long as they could, but when you can find everything on wikipedia for free and more up to date, there's just nothing to keep people buying aside from aesthetics.

Well it's a damn shame that they're ceasing production. They should at the very least, do a limited print run, just for old times sake...and for the odd few without an internet connection.

Honestly, how many people are there out there who have no internet but are willing to spend $1500 for encyclopedias?

Could work for libraries for referencing...but even they are dying out, what with Kindles and such.

I've come to terms with changes like this. A few years ago I might have thought it really sucked, but let's face it, for nostalgia's sake, it can't be that hard to find an old cheap set for next to nothing at a Goodwill.

It's interestint but not surprising. Encyclopedias are pointless now and have been for years. They don't even contain as much information as the internet but are mad expensive.

Kindles are more affecting the book retailer than anything else.

One thing I will miss about printed encyclopedias is that when they are outdated they turn into a time capsule of knowledge. Then again, I am one of those people who collect old encyclopedias and world book/information please/time almanacs.

is Encylopedia Brown okay though? He's now Wikipedia Brown, constantly appearing whenever someone openly wonders such things as "Whatever happened to Meg Ryan, anyway?" to divulge random information. He is appreciated, but also hated for the times he gives fake information because he believes whatever anyone tells him. One day, poor Wiki Brown blacked out after slipping on a bar of SOAP and everyone freaked out, especially his fellow students who relied on him for last-minute school essays.

Looking at this thread, one thing I have to wonder: Am I the only one with grandparents who have no idea how to use technology? They still use encyclopedias (albeit ones they got a long while ago), but wouldn't know how to use the internet even after days of guiding them through, and leaving them notes on how to use it.

My grandpa's PC is pretty much exclusively a Free Cell machine.

I remember when I was about ten, and I first used a CD-ROM encyclopedia. I was amazed at the technology that was at my fingertips, being so used to looking something up in a book. It was a definate impact in what I perceived of computers.
But it is sad in a way, kind of like when TV stations stopped broadcasting over the air signals a few years ago. Time can't stand still for nostalgia's sake, but it is worthy of mentioning when something like this happens.
