Oh wow, I remember the thread where people were predicting numbers in the 400k-500k range. This doesn't even surpass this year's awful Summerslam buyrate.
I shudder to think what they'd have drawn without the Rock's first match in seven years. Under 200k? What a disappointment.

Survivor Series has really fallen over the years. Nobody really cares about it anymore. It ain't the Survivor Series we grew up with.

Whilst its good that the buyrate went up, its pretty sad that Rocky's first match in seven years couldn't help it break the 300k mark. I suppose thats what happens when you don't build up his opponents properly.
Just to think, 5 years ago it was pretty much unheard of for Survivor Series to do anything below 350k.

Aaaaand about now WWE has to be panicking over the possibilities of Mania 28 not being as huge as expected.

Alavarez said something like this in one of the WOR's a month ago:
"It's like they tried to make Rock's return to the ring mean as little as possible."
I realize they didn't want to do some big singles match for Rock since it might take away from the appeal of Rock/Cena, but man oh man was this whole...thing...just thrown together. The match itself didn't mean anything. Nobody bought Miz/Truth as legit threats because they were booked to be chumps. Cena took both of them on his own no problem. Great way to sell a PPV.
All they had to do was Team Rock vs Team Cena.
It was a simple thing to do at a PPV that would've made sense to do it on. They didn't even have to do some stupid thing about Cena asking for Rock's help when he clearly didn't need it. All they had to do was say, "hey, it's Survivor Series. And in preparation for Rock vs Cena at WM28, we're going to have a traditional SS match with Cena and Rock as captains of their team!"
You didn't even need a damn feud to do that. And I guarantee that would've made for better tv leading up to the event. Imagine Rock assembling his team or asking people on Twitter, since they love that, who 'the people' thought were worthy of Team Bring It. Then for weeks people would try to prove to The Rock that they had what it took, and then Rock would approve of his team or something against Cena and his team.

Yeah I really thought it was setup for Team Rock vs Team Cena. Would have been pretty epic and a way to get different guys in the match. Though I really enjoyed Survivor Series overall.

Only issue is where do you put faces and where do you put heels? They could mibbe have done it Cena captains a Raw team and Rock captains a Smackdown team since it's his show, but I reckon keeping Rock and Cena together stopped Cena getting booed so much by going up against the Rock.

Man, that sucks. I thought that was a great show, too. Maybe Rock's drawing power wasn't as great as it looked at first. Oh well.
And the last two year's shows were worse than this?

I think it's good that 280,000 people bought something that is easily accessible on the internet for free, and is then all over YouTube and Dailymotion the next day.
Really, isn't the day of the PPV dead with the rise of the Internet?

Really, isn't the day of the PPV dead with the rise of the Internet? You would think so but apparently the estimates of people streaming the show are as low as five or six thousand. If the PPV era was dead and gone then what would explain the huge success of UFC events over the past couple of years? I am sure they will do a huge number at the end of this month too.

UFC's buyrates are way down in 2011, even though the company and MMA are more popular than ever. And the UFC has been a far more verbal opponent of piracy than the WWE, they clearly believe it hurts them. PPV is not the future of either company. There is are too many easy entertainment options, and it's way too easy to get this for free. I haven't seen the 5k streaming estimates, but individual youtube postings of PPV matches alone get way more hits than that. I don't think that number would include torrents, which is huge source of content theft.

To me, that was always the most fun thing about Survivor Series! My first one was Hulk Hogan's team Vs. Andre's. I thought it was so cool to watch Hulk's friends go against Andre's. There was something so special about it. You never saw elimination tag matches any other time of the year. Call me a sucker for the old school era, but this was such a smart way to go. Remember when they used to name the teams too? I know I'm starting to rant about the good ol' days, but IMHO, they really need to look back at what made SS so popular.

I've also heard that the numbers watching illegally tend to mirror the buys, in other words if people don't think that a PPV isn't worth watching then they won't even bother streaming/downloading it. So all the other factors like the economy, piracy, the number of PPVs etc probably make a difference but in the end it all comes back to the quality of the build-up. Although I can’t find source for that so that could be a load of bollocks.

Really, isn't the day of the PPV dead with the rise of the Internet? Yeah...I think a lot of fans on here have been watching PPV streams for a long time, and don't realize that more people have learned about it in the last couple of years. I had no idea such a thing existed until 2 years ago. That, combined with the higher price, makes buyrates go down massively. In fact, the higher price is most likely in response to all the illegal stream viewing. It's the same thing as record sales.

PPV prices are ridiculous now, and then an extra $5-10 if you want to watch it in HD. It's a rip off and people are choosing other ways to watch it. Can't blame them.

You would think so but apparently the estimates of people streaming the show are as low as five or six thousand. There's no way thats correct. not everyone's a bum or Internet nerd. Not to mention has the attention span to sit in front of a computer for 3 hours and watch a show of dubious quality. Also there's the people just can't watch something when it's not live. Also people who watch with their friends, and you don't invite the guys over to watch a stream.
