*This following will likely be seen as a thread based on a petty, whiny, complaint by a slightly disgruntled member of the IWC looking to bitch about a pet peeve. That's probably correct, but hell that's never stopped us before, so here goes.*
The constant use of guys in tights/trunks/singlets and then wearing their merchandise as entrance attire is getting a bit grating. It probably wouldn't bother me, but virtually everyone seems to do it. Doesn't matter what your gimmick is,or how much it makes sense with your personality and background:
CM Punk: outspoken, rebellious, leader of change: wears a t-shirt Del Rio: wealthy, yet cunning aristocrat who believes in destiny: wears a t-shirt Miz: Hipster-eque cocky and sneaky media darling: wears a t-shirt Mark Henry: Dangerous, tough, and powerful beast: wears a t-shirt Zack Ryder: Funloving, earnest, party guy with a dorky side: wears a t-shirt Cena: Determined, jokey while still serious role model: wears a t-shirt Daniel Bryan: Skilled, humble, technical vegan wrestler: wears a t-shirt Sheamus: Fight-loving, ill-tempered, Irish badass: wears a t-shirt Randy Orton: Quasi-sociopathic, unmerciful, lone wolf with a mean streak: wears a t-shirt R-Truth: Wide-eyed, whacked out paranoid conspiracy theorist: wears a t-shirt
Yeah I know, they occasionally change a bit on PPV. Still do it too much.

You forgot Christian and Big Show at the very least, and I think Air Boom have matching t-shirts now too.
It's still kind of grating that they shill their merch EVERY week instead of mixing it up with proper entrance attire.
Also, when was the last time anybody had entrance -pants- or anything besides the occasional jacket or robe like Santino? I think Kofi's warm-ups might have been the last one.

It is basically because they're trying to sell t-shirts. I guess they want them in their trunks so they can be ready, instead of having to change a lot during the show. Though personally, I like when guys show up in different outfits, it kinda makes them stand out. Especially if they don't know they're wrestling. If they know they are wrestling, obviously they should always be in tights.

They all look the same now....but at least they're not tucking the shirt into the trunks or wearing fanny packs like they did in the 90's lol

For some guys, it works just fine. I think Punk has a great look with it. Works okay with Christian (although his current shirt is HORRIBLE), but in his case his flashy entrance attire worked much better for him.
For guys like Del Rio and Wade Barry, it's detrimental to their entrance/look. Wade's coat flying in the air was an image you remember about him. Del Rio wearing the fancy scarf alone with the sparks flying made him look like a big deal (yes yes fairly quickly). But when he's this rich tycoon and he's out there in a t-shirt like all the other boys, it looks weird.

Maybe the superstars are too poor to buy casual clothing?

Know who had a cool t-shirt? Macho Man Savage. Lots of people bought those cool purple shirts, too. Know how many times he wore that shirt to the ring? ZERO.
I think the problem is that three of their biggest merchandise sellers ever, Hogan, Austin and Cena, did wear their shirts on the way to the ring. It really fit those three specific guys (Hogan just wore it to tear it off, Austin was a redneck, Cena is the everydude) but that's somehow glommed onto to everyone. And it's quite tacky.

Barrett's definitely a guy where it's clearly out of place.
Either the coat with the rose or some kind of badass duster, but a t-shirt with a logo... not that's not the attire of someone bringing the Barrett Barrage.

It reminds me of certain animes where the characters wear things with their names on them for no apparent reason. Like in Dragon Ball, Bulma would be wearing a hat that said Bulma. Just in case you forgot who she was, I guess.
So when I see wrestlers wearing their own shirts, I think of that and laugh instead of getting annoyed. But the point about different characters with personalities that should lend themselves to different types of clothes is well taken.

Vince is just playing that commodities market. He's got half of his money invested in cotton.

It's awful, isn't it? I remember how incredible it was when the nWo first introduced the aesthetic (and boy, did it sell shirts like hotcakes), but when EVERYONE does it, it just takes away from the gimmicks and blandifies them.
And WWE doesn't need any more help making their characters bland and boring these days, because they're doing a great job with that already.

What annoys me is how entrance attire has almost disappeared entirely in the WWE other than the t-shirt.

Remember when JoMo wore his shirt on his belt because he couldn't cover his abs? Now that was forced.
