Metallica has always had a pretty steady line-up, except in regards to their bass player. So guys, who's the best they've had?!? Ron McGovney doesn't count... he never played on an album, and we all know he would get owned on this poll, so yeah. Just the following three: Cliff Burton (1983 - 1986) Their first main bass player, who created such masterpieces as the bass solo, (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, on Kill 'Em All, the intro of For Whom the Bell Tolls, and helped make the instrumentals The Call of Ktulu and Orion that much more awesome. Would've made a lot more awesome music with Metallica, if it wasn't for the unfortunate bus crash in Sweden that killed him. Emphasized plenty of wah and distortion in his bass playing. Jason Newsted (1986 - 2001) Burton's replacement, and the longest lasting Metallica bassist to date. He was a bit shafted by the band, as he was basically mixed out of the ...And Justice for All album, and had only 3 writing credits on the four albums he appeared on. Blackened is one of Metallica's regularly played songs at their concerts now, while My Friend of Misery and Where the Wild Things Are have never been played, with the exception of the bass line of My Friend of Misery, which is completely awesome. Newsted seemed a bit more of a traditional bass player, who went off of what the guitars did. He seemed to me like more of a "good hand" instead of being extraordinary. Although I'm unsure if that was the band's fault or Newsted's. Robert Trujillo (2003 - Present) And the current bassist of Metallica, Robert Trujillo. Used to play for Suicidal Tendencies and in Ozzy Osbourne's band. Joined right after St. Anger came out. Has a pretty badass bass line in the song "Suicide and Redemption". Is basically a human monkey. Has more of a funky playing style than the others. And he has played Orion on stage before while Newsted never did. Vote away guys!

In listening to isolated bass 'Tallica tracks on YouTube, Burton had some seriously amazing bass lines, and a killer tone at that. Robert and Jason are great, but for overall I'd have to give it to Burton.

Burton. He made the band heavier. Without him, metallica would have probably not gotten the following that they did.

Newsted simply for his live presence and raw energy. I feel that he always got shafted, Where THe Wild Things are is one of my fave jams and I love the bass in My Friend of Misery. Don't get me wrong, Cliff was AMAZING but to me, in a very strange way, Newsted WAS Metallica and when he left the band is the exact time I can pinpoint my interest in my former favorite band going away forever.

Newsted. Despite being arguably the least skilled of the three, I truly believe he was the heart and soul of that band despite not being an original member. He was always the guy you saw posing with fans and signing autographs, and he seemed downright heartbroken over leaving, but the other guys' asshole tendencies just left him with no other option. Big fan of the guy.

Burton. He was just phenomenal.
Newsted had a different style, as a bass player and songwriter he wasn't as good as Cliff but he was damn solid and was an excellent showman.
That mix would've much improved an already amazing album, wtf were James and Lars thinking. They shouldn't have been such dicks to the guy either.
Trujillo is amazing, probably the closest talent to Cliff's out there.

I'm voting Rob Trujillo. He essentially saved the band from themselves after nearly falling apart. Plus, he's just a damn good bass player. I mean, did you guys ever listen to Infectious Grooves?
Come on. Infectious Grooves!

Come on. Infectious Grooves! Infectious Grooves is okay, but how does that make him the best bass player for Metallica? I'm picking Cliff because he had the best musicality and sense of melody of the three and he played on most of my favorite Metallica songs.

I love Newsted and I voted him. I think Cliff was more technically proficient (hell, Robert probably is, too), but Jason's my guy.

Cliff by and far. Though Jason Newsted is a bit underrated. Trujillo is also very, very good.

Gotta go with Cliff on this one. But Jason and Robert are both great players as well.

Voted for Cliff,he was amazing and age has only made him sound greater.
Jason is someone I feel for, because he was totally crapped on by the whole band, though his lead vocals were good and his bass is very underrated.
Rob is a very groovy bass played, but for the life of me he doesn't fit in.

Depends how you mean. As a bass player, Cliff is superior.
As a band member, I think Newsted added more. His vocal harmonies in their live and studio sounds, his way of playing bass I actually preferred - shame he never got the respect he deserved.
Trujillo may be a better bassist than Newsted (MAY be) but there's a giant hole where their heart used to be, and I REALLY miss those live harmonies. Added a lot of tunefulness to their riffs.

And he has played Orion on stage before while Newsted never did. He did in medleys during 1992-93. In fact, Burton also never played Orion live.
