On the plus side the NFL is not as likely as the WWE to try to whitewash the role that head injuries might have played into this tragedy. Some positive changes could come from this. Sad that someone HoF worthy has to die to highlight the issue though.

Very saddened by this; he was one of my favorite guys to watch and a favorite of mine as a kid. RIP.

Just a couple of tweets, one sad and one memory:
Pat Kirwan @patkirwancbs Willie Roaf just told me one of his friends called Junior Seau this morning and asked him to play golf today. He said he couldn't. RIP Junior
John Elway @johnelway
I had the pleasure of playing against Junior for many years. He played the game the way it was meant to be played...We shared a lot of laughs from our AFC West battles when I saw Junior before he was inducted into the Chargers HOF in November. Junior was a true competitor and a special player. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Seau family.

What a sad situation/story. Certainly one of the all time greats/class act. Heartbreaking watching his mom cry for her son screaming "take me instead"...
It will be very interesting to see the studies and work done in the coming years regarding football/contact sports and brain trauma. NOT TO OPEN A CAN OF WORMS (NO FLAMING), but I find this eerily similar to the Benoit situation (yes, I know Seau didn't take the life of anyone other than himself, I get it), in regards to the possibility of brain trauma/repeated blows to the head over years and years time. I would think work could/will be done on Seau's brain to show how traumatized or damaged it had become. By all accounts, he lead a good life and did an incredible amount of work in his community and charity work, and now this? The fallout will be interesting regarding the work on possible brain damage/contact sports.

I can't believe this.
I grew up a Chargers fan as a young teenager because I always for some reason had a liking for teams that (At that time) weren't very good or middle of the pack. Junior really came to my attention the year the Chargers made the Super Bowl.

Two things:
1. Ike Taylor is an idiot. 2. Watching that video of Junior Seau's mother was f***ing heartbreaking.

I get what Ike Taylor was trying to say there. When he was alive, Seau was a living legend. Poor phrasing of words, but I get the meaning behind them.
Junior sounded like he was one of the nicest guys around. Which makes this even more heartbreaking. Reading Dean Spanos' statement on the death made it sound like he lost a genuine friend. Hearing one of his former teammates talk and doing his best not to break down crying and his mother... oh man.
What a tragic day.

This absolutely sucks. I looked up to Jr Seau when I was a kid. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and fans of the San Diego Chargers.

I think I had heard before this has happended that Seau was dealing with depression. It truly is sad to see anyone decide to end it all.
RIP Junior Seau

I remember it was a big deal when the Dolphins got Seau from the Chargers, but injuries slowed him down during his 3-year run in Miami. Of course, his best years were in San Diego.
RIP Junior Seau.

Yeah, when I read about the shot to the chest the first thing that came to mind was him trying to save his brain for study (I believe another former NFL'er did the same recently). From a police perspective, that is an extremely strange way for most to commit suicide. My exact thoughts.
