It was announced a while back that Ryan Reynolds will be starring in a remake/reboot of the Highlander film series. My initial reaction to this was...negative.
Upon further review...still negative. While Highlander is far from the most serious film ever made, playing the situation straight really made the film better to me. Ryan Reynolds is not a person you get to play a role straight.
He's a comedic actor. He says funny things. He's quippy. He's snarky. He's done action, but it's not that grand.
A wisecracking vampire hunter. A wisecracking Wolverine sidekick. A wisecracking Green Lantern. Paper Man.
Anyway, I'm wondering if I'm on the weird "Heath Ledger before The Dark Knight" side here, but I just don't buy it.
I have visions of horrible quips before decapitations. Mocking fourth wall busting questions followed by a head tilt. Playing Queen's theme and suggesting the group may be immortals themselves. Having a random side character who hides out on Holy Ground watching old TV because they're obsessed with seeing every show ever made.
So, yeah. There can be only one. But should it be Ryan Reynolds?

He puts on sunglasses before he decapitates the Kurgan.

Whatever happens, it can't be any worse than "The Source".

I agree. I like Ryan Reynolds but he's not the guy I'd pick to play a serious role. Do you really see Ryan Reynolds being able to convey the pain of an immortal being having to watch as the love of his life grows old while he remains the same?
Queen song or not, can you see Ryan Reynolds pulling that off?

There can be only one...Highlander movie. Seriously, the rest of them are total ass, and should be erased from everyone's memories.

It won't be funny, because these days major studios can't make shitty movies that are bad enough to be entertainingly shit. It'll just be a colossal sigh of failure.

Because Christopher Lambert was never quippy, snarky or generally irreverant? The duel with Bassett? "Whatever you say, Jack. You're the master race!"? Suggesting that Fasil cut off his own head in despair at the Freebirds' wrestling?
Whaaaaa?

Ryan Reynolds is not a good choice for Connor McCloud. Period. That said, Kane would be my ideal choice for Kurrgan.

Suggesting that Fasil cut off his own head in despair at the Freebirds' wrestling? Whaaaaa? Yes. There is room for quips...I just don't think that Ryan has any chance whatsoever of pulling off any real emotion in his performance unlike Lambert. Lambert can be funny and has that...laugh of his, but when it comes time to be serious, he can pull it off. I just can't imagine Reynolds doing it without his pout-like angry face or breaking down to say something funny. "You killed the love of my life...well, this life." I see that line totally coming from him before a big revenge battle.

I really don't get why Reynolds keeps getting more prominent roles like this and Green Lantern. I think the guy's alright, but it doesn't fit him at all and he's never going to be the huge star they're trying to make him.
