Here's a hockey player I know triplethreatmark considers more unlucky than lazy- Martin Havlat.
When he was healthy- a big emphasis on when- he had such skill and talent he stood out on the ice. In 2005-06 with Ottawa, he played in just 18 games but had 9 goals. Over a full season, he'd have had 41 goals.
Also very unlucky in that the Senators made the Stanley Cup Finals the year after he left Ottawa, then the Blackhawks let him go to Minnesota the year before they won the Cup.
He also ended up missing significant time this past season because he slipped over the boards during a line change:
Speaking of unlucky hockey players, I have to say Paul Kariya post getting cross-checked in the face by Gary Suter. Not only did he miss the rest of the 97-98 season, but he missed being selected to go to the Olympics that year as well. Once he recovered, he never really was the dynamic player he was prior to that incident and injury. He showed flashes here and there (see 03 playoffs) but just wasn't the same player anymore.
Anyways, he ends up losing his buddy Selanne in a trade in 2001 and never scored at the same rate he did prior to Selanne being traded. He then goes to the Finals but doesn't win. Lies about resigning with Anaheim to go to greener pastures and reunite with Teemu Selanne in 2003 with the Avalanche only to go down as one of the biggest free agent busts ever and get bounced in the second round ironically to San Jose. After the lockout, he had some decent but largely forgettable years in Nashville and St. Louis before retiring in 2010 due to lingering concussion issues. He retired at 989 points and surely if he had played one more season, he would have gotten to 1000. Alas, it was not meant to be.
