WWE just can't book GMs right IMO. This isn't an AJ criticism, just a generic GM one, so lets avoid that route today.
We all know how cliche the heel GMs can get, but now they're already getting there with the face GMs.
Heel complains or brags, "Surprise opponent", Ryback/Orton/Show/Some other tough guy. I feel like its happened 3-4 times the last 2 weeks. I know it happened twice this week.
Sort it out, WWE.

Kill the GM concept WWE. Please. It's a tired, and ultimately lazy storytelling device we've seen virtually every iteration of.

oh, and another thing.
Some of these heels are Smackdown guys. Why don't they just leave the arena and laugh it off. ADR and Daniel Bryan shouldn't be forced to do s*** on RAW, unless Booker is there.

I don't want the GM concept killed because it makes no sense for there not to be someone there and in charge that people will listen to (refs don't cut it) but I do think they need to change how they use them. They need to stop the surprise matches completely and instead use that to put something on next week. For example, do the whole Otunga backstage thing but instead of making it for tonight, say he'll be facing a surprise next week. Don't have them making matches during the show for the ongoing show unless it's something that cannot be avoided like two guys brawling all over the back so they just say get to the ring and do it right.

The GM concept is useless when COO HHH and Steph and Vince are all around.
Vince worked as an authority because its legit. We KNOW he's in charge. Its the same now with Trips and Steph. But now there's literally 7 people with 'power'. Booker has his own 3 man team for crying out loud.

They can easily go back to the Tunney route. Have a nebulous board of directors or on-screen president that you only ever see if there's some big storyline controversy and such. It worked for decades before the GM thing.

The only continuation of the angle should be maybe Kane coming to SmackDown.

But now there's literally 7 people with 'power'. Booker has his own 3 man team for crying out loud. The thing is that nowadays the McMahons are only brought in for either guest cameos or OMG BIG DRAMA ANGLES, so they're much too busy to deal with Miz, Cody, Bryan, etc. That's why they delegate that stuff to the GMs. Booker has a three man team, but do Teddy or Eve really have "power". Are they going to just come on and make matches on their own personal whims, or do they have to basically relay information from the GM? Cause people higher up than the GM's might not like them refusing to wrestle? The only people higher up than the GMs are the McMahons/HHH themselves, who can't be bothered with pettiness like this when they have the likes of John Laurinaitis, Brock Lesnar, Nexus, or whatever BIG storyline is going on. It goes two ways. I agree that GMs should have power over the Superstars who show up from the opposite brand, because even without a brand split, AJ and Booker are still the General Managers of RAW the TV Show and SmackDown the TV Show respectively. But it seems like the SmackDown Superstars could easily avoid AJ entirely if they wanted to, unless Booker specifically told them "I made a deal with AJ, you're going to be on RAW this Monday". Del Rio "wasn't booked" to be on RAW, but showed up in his wrestling gear "for no reason".

Remember Jack Tunney and Gorilla Monsoon? Now that's how you handle an authority figure. Have them show up so rarely that it feels like a big deal when they do have to get involved.

Every GM should have a Game of Thrones-style 'Small Council'.
You could have Ted DiBiase as Master of Coin, Just Joe as Master of Whispers, Paul Burchill as Master of Ships and Arn Anderson as Grand Maester.
The GM's Hand could be Mark Henry's lad.

AJ's time management is getting worse too, she left 20 minutes of dead air last week but was saved by HBK getting attacked and I think she gave Punk way to much time to simply pick an opponent.
Oh well at least she books something for the main-event rather than just hoping for the opportunity to make a tag-match and I doubt there's a manual for how to book a three hour show.

The GM concept doesn't necessarily have to die, but it can't keep going the way it's been going.
I think TNA's handling it decently this day by having two legends like Hogan and Sting filling that role; since they're so well regarded by fans they can use most of their on-screen time putting current wrestlers over, or getting a crowd excited for a big show, etc.
That said, if they didn't have two guys with the stature of Hogan/Sting there, I'd just say scrap the idea entirely.
Authority figures as weekly on-screen characters are just played out. The less you see them, and the more business-like they appear, the more realistic and "professional" the show feels. As said before, Jack Tunney was perfect for the role in the old days, Gorilla Monsoon did it pretty well, and lots of promotions have had guys in that role who never felt like they were taking over the show.
Plus, at the end of the day, you sell tickets by promoting two wrestlers against one another; the most time spent emphasizing the GM, the less time you're dedicating to getting two guys who can sell a PPV for you over, or getting their feud over.

Board of directors. And those guys are apparently dumb as hell. They had Johnny Ace around for months actively trying to fire John Cena, who has been referred to onscreen a bunch of times in the past year, as the golden goose, making the company millions. And they don't just fire the guy who's trying to cost the company millions? Get the f*** outta here.
