So I'm sitting here in the Grand Bahama warily eying up Tropical Storm Isaac, which is supposed to intensify to a hurricane at the end of the week at least. My apartment is waterfront. We're due to get at the very least a glancing blow, but it'll still have to see how much more direct it gets.
I've lived in the Midwest all my life. This is my first tropical storm. I know we've got some experienced posters here, what do I need to know? I don't know what the evacuation threshold is, but the school is supposed to let us know if things are going to hit the fan, and I've already started packing up; fortunately since I'm only here through November I don't have too much to bring with, but I don't know if the airlines are courteous enough to wave the baggage limits if I suddenly have a few more checked baggages, because those medical textbooks are going to need their own damn bag, but I digress.
My apartment windows face perpendicular to the ocean, on a third floor of a seven story building. I'm on a fairly protected side overlooking the bridge between the parts of the complex. My windows appear to have no in-built storm shutters since it's a 1970s-vintage complex, but I'm not even sure what level of storm warrants shutters.
If anything, I've got until this weekend to see what's going to happen.

I don't know much about Hurricanes, but from what I've heard you are supposed to stand back as it comes through.

Get a boat and head to the ocean. Then yell into it and you'll be able to find the shrimp.

To be serious, I am not familiar with the storm patterns over Grand Bahama. I know that hurricanes pick up strength as they move north, so perhaps the windows in your apartment are adequate enough. Ask your neighbors, find out if there are any local storm shelters, stock up on a few vital supplies like canned food and bottled water, and be sure to be ready a few days before you need to.

Should be a CAT 1-2, winds 73-95 or so when it pulls through.. Remember forecasting a hurricane is tough because you basically have a mass of water moving within a mass of water and it wont follow a direct path. 30 miles one way or the other and your fortunes could change dramatically. Expect to lose power anywhere from a day to two weeks, so be prepaired. prepair for flooding and wind damage. Prepare for the worst hope for the best and watch the news. I've been indirectly impacted by 4 hurricanes Gloria (85), Bob (91), Paula (10), Irene(11)... just watch the forecast

If it's a Cat 1 coming through, just take a nap. I've literally woken up for work one day and realized there was a Cat 1 Hurricane going on outside. I called in and went back to sleep.

I remember there was a Cat 1 hurricane last year that the news and government tried to make a huge deal about. So when the storm passed through and nothing happened, the media went out of their way to find flooded areas (which probably would have flooded if it was only drizzling) to make it seem like the big disaster they forecast it to be.
