Looking at the gif, as small as it is, I don't think his legs being spread out had anything to do with it. I think when Cena hit his head, Rock's body was forced down and that stretched the muscles too far. Most hamstrings are too tight in the first place, and it's worse when you're very muscular. Decreasing the angle between your torso and your leg that fast is likely to strain or tear it. Having his legs closer together wouldn't have helped that. The real problem is that he didn't drop to his knees, and his legs weren't so far apart that he couldn't do that. It seems more like a timing issue than anything else. I thought people just sort of faceplanted when they took that move, and spread legs mean a stable base that it might be hard to just flop out of.

I have always hated that move, especially from a big guy like Cena. It looks goofy and it's dangerous.

I've always disliked that move as part of Cena's moveset. When he started using it for big guys like Khali (IIRC) and Show it looked impressive and kind of made sense. But when he busts it out against people like Orton and The Rock it's always awkwardly executed.

this. i dont believe it for a second Partial Tears are vastly different than full on "OFF THE BONE BAH GAWD", I'm guessing it's a partial. Full tear and you could have probably seen his leg change shape and he wouldn't be able to even stand. Between the moment, the adrenalin, his professional experience... doesn't surprise me. Him grabbing his leg and quitting would have killed the match and been one of the most disappointing finishes ever. That really makes me wonder if WWE has a back-up plan for what would happen, if say, the Rock was to tear his quad in the opening seconds of the match and become unable to compete. I'm guessing they don't.

I'm guessing they don't. Because of how unpredictable injuries are, I think the general rule for wrestlers is to just improvise. In my local indy federation NEW (New Era Wrestling, Ft Myers, FL) the general rule for dealing with sudden injuries at a live event is to always have 2 backup wrestlers for when the card is forceably changed. I many cases the person who gets injured is simply swapped out at the time of injury with another competitor that the still-able-to-wrestle opponent has worked with before during practice. Also in The Rock's case, I'm sure they would've just told Cena to take a quick Rock Bottom and repeat the HHH/Taker Match 1 ending where both combatants oversold their injuries after the match to mask Rock's real muscle tear. In his case Rock would not have been replaceable, though. People bought 'Mania specifically to watch him wrestle, so unless Cena accidentally broke Dwayne's leg or something there wasn't much choice but to work through the pain after the year-long buildup.

Tag match, probably, if the injury is that impossible to work around.
