Don't they know that, at some point, it's a bad idea?

Well if they are on an island, they don't really have much choice in the matter, just getting to choose how close they are to the gaping maw of the volcano. If it is a solid land mass, then, I dunno.
Isn't the soil near volcanoes supposed to be like REALLY good for crop growing, though?

Isn't the soil near volcanoes supposed to be like REALLY good for crop growing, though? Yeah, volcanic soil is very fertile. Eruptions spew out minerals from deep within the earth that are rarer on the surface, in addition to having the essential nutrients, so it's really good for growing most things.

Most people who live next to active volcanoes are too poor to just "leave"...where would they go?

Sometimes the volcano moves to where they are. Like buddy in Mexico who had a giant ass volcano grow in his field.
Yellowstone is the one you really ought to worry about, well, worry is a bad word, if it blows, it's all over anyway.

In my historical geology class they said that is is overdue for an eruption by around 150k years.

I can't really imagine seeing every single one of us being killed. Granted most of us would and the few survivors would be sent back to the stone age but still.

Way before that, at least the stone age people would have crops that would grow. Gonna be hard to do under what will basically be nuclear winter like conditions.

If it erupted under the worst possible conditions, it'd seriously hinder humanity and render most of the US uninhabitable. The population would probably drop to a tenth or so of it's current state, but as for complete extinction goes, I don't think that'd happen. Of course, it is possible for conditions to change and not erupt in quit as catastrophic of a way as well.

I'm more confused by the people who live in the Tornado belt and keep rebuilding every year.

I'm more confused by the people who live in the Tornado belt and keep rebuilding every year. It's not like you rebuild every year. There are some places that have been hit more than once, but for the most part, it's still really rare that you'll lose your home in a tornado.
