So I've had short or medium to bushy hair all my life, but I've never really let it get to the point where it needed to be to stop growing straight out and start draping.
With the possibility of future hairloss (assuming what they say about your mother's side being connected to MPB is true) I figure now's a good as time of any to try to grow my hair out.
How far, I don't know, but enough to get some sufficient length, some sufficient bangs, to cover up my widow's peak.
I just hate how you have to go through a stage where your hair absolutely looks like ass first.
I haven't had a haircut since February, and I started from decently short. My hair used to grow insanely fast, but it almost seems like it's slowed down comparatively.
I know there's a decent amount of male posters here with long hair. How long does it take to stop looking like crap? Because my main problem is going to be resisting the urge to just get it cut in the meantime.

I've grown my hair out from pretty much 1 or 2 guarded to shoulder length or a little longer 2 or 3 times now. For me, it takes a good 11-14 months to get it to the point where it gets good enough length to flow.
And yes in between there are a lot of stages that aren't exactly fun. My hair is naturally curly, which I despise. So I have to endure a few months in there before it's a point that it straightens out some or I can straighten it myself.
But again, each time I've done it, I've started with it really, really short. So if yours is a little longer, that will knock some time off that.

Depends on your hair texture. I'm black with a bit of Cherokee in me on my mother's side (I have no idea what I am of my father's side). So my hair is naturally thick with a bit of curl. It will be a good 3 to 5 years before I get my hair to where I want it to be. It's currently brushing my shoulders.
Just keep your hair washed, trimmed, and moisterized.

I forgot to mention, this is another something that long-haired posters can give me advice about. About trimming, mostly. I really need to somehow get it cleaned up without losing any length, because the sideburns from my short style are currently insane and need to go yesterday, and I'm getting the scraggly feelers at the base of my hairline in the back that looks reasonably unkempt. Plus I've potentially got a few interviews coming up, so I'll have to figure out something.

Not long for me really. My hair and beard grow back in about a month or so.

Super long, I have not had a haircut since I was 12. My family is full of Afro's and dreads.

Sadly the sun will probably cool into a white dwarf before my hair ever grows "long" again

Entirely, entirely depends on your hair.
I buzzed my hair on a longer setting about 2 months ago I think it was. Now it is getting to be a bit of a mess. I'd wager I could get it in a ponytail by the end of summer at the latest. Could be wrong though....I went from a pony tail for years to short hair so it is all a bit voodoo to me.

My hair is midlength right now, so it will take about another 3-6 months to grow my hair long.

I go from a crew cut to near-shoulder length in about a year and a half.

I think it took about a year for mine to get to my shoulders. Beware, it's a pain in the ass sometimes.

I have attempted it once, but my hair just refuses to grow in a downward fashion. After 12 months, I had this enormous headbanger mop that went maybe halfway down the back of my neck. By month 14, it was finally all the way down, but still not shoulder length. By that point, I just gave up and got a brush cut.

Getting it to midback took about 2 years.

Took me about 2 years to get dreads that almost reach my shoulder. I'm probably gonna cut it soon though.
