It had Will Smith, that alone makes it ten thousands better than a Michael Bay film. And Jeff Goldblum. .... f*** Jeff Goldblum.

why do they call it ID4 I don't get it This thread might have been the first time I've seen it referred to as ID4. Really? because ID4 was plastered over pretty much every bit of merchandise they put out for it.

Easily one of my favorite movies. So re-watchable - just the right amount of cheese. A better (certainly more enjoyable at least, no screaming Dakota Fanning) War of the Worlds than Spielberg's War of the Worlds.
Sure, it is more than a little implausible that a mid-90s Macbook of all things would interface with an alien computer at all, but f*** it. The film doesn't take itself so seriously where hat question is even a problem, IMHO. Just deal with it.
UP YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURS!!! (KABOOM)

Apparently there was almost some copyright dispute or something or other with another film called Independence Day, so they almost had to completely change the name to ID4, which would have made as much sense as calling Battle: Los Angeles "BLA".
But I guess they liked the ID4 logo enough to plaster it all over everything anyway.
Also, I love it for being one of the last disaster porn-type movies to use almost entirely practical effects. I just wish there were still some of the cut destruction scenes somewhere where I could see them.

It's a superb movie from the beginning up to the point where the aliens attack
After that, it loses momentum, but it's still a great summer movie.

It's funny when I watch this movie, it just seems that so many of the FX still hold up pretty well despite being almost 20 years old. I'm guessing this is just because they used cgi to enhance stuff as opposed to carrying stuff if you get my drift.

I shall be watching this at least twice. One of the first films I ever saw at the theatre and I loved (almost) every silly minute of it.

Welcome wagon is in the air! *5 minutes later* ummm ..... welcome wagon is back ..... on the ground??? I think the welcome wagon flashed the wrong message. Instead of saying "Welcome to Earth" they actually said "Shoot here to win a prize!!"

Does anyone remember the MTV special that aired in the first week of July 1996 where they celebrated the film by giving Will Smith a beach house in his honor? It was like four hours long? I'd love to see that again. I remember watching the making of special on Sci Fi channel like a billion times.
The marketing of this movie was so well done, imo.

As someone who LOVES Independence Day (I check it out from the library entirely too often) this is another one of those movies where I had no idea that critics didn't like it. It's weird finding out until later that your childhood favorite movies were hated by "professional" movie reviewers. Also, yeah I'll def. be seeing this in 3D at least twice.

So did Randy Quaid's character actually get kidnapped by aliens? But everyone seemed to laugh at his abduction story, even though they were preparing for an attack....against aliens.

Based on the novelisation (which is excellent, by the way), yes. I'd say it's canon as it was co-written by Dean Devlin.

Remember that fake news bulletin that aired on Fox? It aired real movie footage mixed with a fake news program detailing the arrival of the aliens. Very cool! Fox did something similar with X-Men 1.
