The impression I got from reading an interview where Shelley talked about it was that it was a contract thing. I don't know about Aries' and Strong's contracts but Shelley basically said he had a contractual obligation to put TNA first. He also wasn't asked to skip the ROH show, he was told to, and just got a phone call that said "you were pulled from the ROH show, get down here". I don't really blame any of the wrestlers for making the choice they did in that situation, they all did what they felt was right.
On the one hand, I can totally understand TNA punishing them for it, because it sets a bad precedent if you tell your employees to do something and they completely disregard it and you don't do anything. On the other hand, it was a dick move on TNA's part in the first place. I mean, I get that they were concerned but they could have gone about it in a way less dickish way.
