I'm not talking the gimmick of his heel persona. I mean the actual guy.
I'm reading books, and hearing interviews, and remember TNA and they all say he's the same crazy guy in a suit, bowtie, big words, grammar nazi that we all saw in WWF 93.
He seemed so normal right before the heel turn. Can't imagine him actually dressing and talking like that when he was a face and the 14 years he was off WWF tv.

I think it boils down to Backlund being a guy that was broke in under kayfabe standards where The Original Sheik kayfabed his family. Lou Albano had his wife kayfabing on network TV all the way into the Pat Patterson incident of the early 90s. I think he just enjoys it; it allows him to remain true to his wrestling roots and be entertaining all the time as opposed to running his energy company.

I hear he's still in great shape.
Bring him in as a manager who can take bumps. Put Mr. Backlund with a "smart/sophisticated" heel and let the magic begin. (this could be WWE, TNA, or even ROH for all I care; I just want him back in the business.)

The reason he isn't in the HOF yet is because that would make him seem retired and done.
He believes he still has another run left in the tank.

I was surprised by the "Mr. Backlund" gimmick because he was so dead set against that kind of thing originally. That's why Vince wanted Hogan and to usher in this new era of "sports entertainment" it wasn't Backlund's thing at all. Then he shows up with that gimmick. I'm still not sure how to take it.

Otunga immediately comes to mind as a wrestler that could benefit from Backlund as a manager, especially with his current Clarence Mason-esque character that plays up his Harvard law background.

I wish I was of age to vote in 1996, I would've litterally voted for him in a write in ballot on the polls just for kicks
