Last week I caught a film screening in a park of 'Empire Records' I hadn't seen it since high school and, having worked at a record store since then, I liked it even more now.
Thing is, the timing seemed a bit longe than I remembered, and a line I really liked (Rex Manning's "Wy do you all just fade away") had been removed. I did some looking around online and apparently the version that was screened was the 'Remix Fan Edition' which swaps out some music/scenes for new longer and alternate versions.
I was wondering, what do you think of the film? Also, do you have the original non-remix release on DVD?

One of my favourite movies of all time , definetly in my top 10 of all time , lucky for me I still own my cherished VHS copy.
Lucas: Mitchell's the man Joe. Joe: And the man calls all the shots. Lucas: Damn the man. Joe: Let me explain it to you. Mitchell's the man. I'm the idiot. You're the screw-up. And we're all losers. Welcome to music town.

I enjoy it, and have a copy on DVD. I think it's the remix edition.

I have the Remix edition dvd. I think it might be the only version out on dvd, but don't hold me to that. The Remix edition is the only one currently in print (apparently the 2-pack of it with 'Singles' is also the fan remix cut, but I haven't heard that verified outside of Amazon.com reviews) but the original was in production from 2001-2003. While there's no official word on why the original was retracted, I think it might have something to do with music rights for the DVD release and, to avoid the "HEY THE MUSIC IS DIFFERENT" bitching, the studio just slapped in a few scenes and alternate takes to make the "Fan remix edition." I've been trying to track down the original (I really want to sample the "Fade away" line) and I was hoping someone here might have it, or could dub the VHS onto a file and hook me up. But I digress... I have to say, for all the reviews I've read about the movie being "unrealistic" and "too melodramatic," it's the most dead-on portrayal of a record store I've ever seen. Having worked at one in Union Square, everyday was a fun, albeit emotionally volatile, chaotic adventure. There was a real sense of community and family too, presumably because if you were like me and working at a music store from 2008-2009, it's because you were a music store person. Anyone else here worked at a music store and think the drama in the film was surprisingly accurate?

I have it on DVD, not sure which version off the top of my head, and LOVE it. It's such a time capsule back to the mid-90's.

I hate that remix version simply for the fact that they added in like 12 new scenes of that annoying pizza guy. I hated that character.

I still have the VHS. Does the remix one have scenes with Tobey Maguire in them? He's listed in the credits but doesn't actually appear in the original version.
"A person like you needs to diminish their criminal impulses, not magnify them. Maybe some classical, or some jazz." "Maybe you bite me."

"A person like you needs to diminish their criminal impulses, not magnify them. Maybe some classical, or some jazz." "Maybe you bite me." I don't believe so. Apparently the director hated Tobey and had the footage removed (and, I'd imagine destroyed) in the 11th hour to make sure it didn't have any chance of being seen again.

I use the "it's rex manning day" line any time I think a day's going to go badly.

I bought it a few years back and it has the lost footage of rex manning

I haven't seen the movie since I rented it on VHS back when it was a fairly new movie. It's hard for me to imagine the film with the Rex Manning parts cut out. I don't think I would like that. I might be interested in seeing what the new scenes they added are like though. Maybe I'll rent it.
