Was just wondering when the background characters that make up the Board of Directors was first brought up? Also, what does everyone think of its existence?
I think it's pretty stupid to have it co-exist with the GMs of Raw and Smackdown. It seems that the Board has an established authority over the GMs, yet many times the GMs overrule them and set their own matches.
It would make more sense if the Board just solely evaluated the performances of the GMs rather than also get involved in deciding #1 contenders and other things like that.

First time that I remember hearing about them was back in 1999 when Linda McMahon named Stone Cold the CEO.

I'm not a fan of this idea of the board of directors. It just seems like, it's a pie chart when it comes to authority figures.
I guess I yearn for the days of one sole on screen authority figure that's just, there. Jack Tunney or Gorilla Monsoon. Hell, put Teddy Long in that spot, have him make all the tag team matches he wants. Just one official figure who makes matches and is called upon when needed.
And can we not have like, big video montages for our authority figures to try and get them some babyface sympathy, despite being always dominant.

I seem to remember them going back to the days of Tunney. They weren't the kinda all powerful figure they are now on TV but I always remember hearing about how Tunney, Monsoon, Piper and so on were the ones charged with running WWE by the Board of Directors.

I like my theory better, that The Board of Directors is a literal, actual, inanimate wooden board with the names of Hollywood directors scribbled all over it.
Old-timey directors too, like Cecil B. DeMille.

My problem with using the Board of Directors in a storyline is that it is completely unrealistic. A wrestler not happy runs to the BoD and makes demands and gets his way. Thats like a McDonalds employee going over his manager and regional manager's head to demand to the BoD that he doesn't like his schedule and gets his way.

I think the hierarchy in WWE(kayfabe-wise) is a lot simpler than most situations. You go from the wrestlers, to the road agents, to the General Manager, to the Board of Directors. Then again, I could be wrong.

The Board of Directors mostly handle the business stuff. The General Managers handle the TV shows, the wrestlers; generally their focus is on the in-ring product.

I think of the shadowed people in the Avengers...or the ones in Darkwing Duck.
