Remember when Jack Tunney was President of the WWF and he occasionally would show up to present a belt to a new champion or very rarely issue a suspension after a completely out of line action by a wrestler?
What was wrong with that?

This. At least make it the Rock so we won't see the GM so much.

What was wrong with that? That idea is probably even more outdated. I mean the days of Jack Tunney coincided with main eventers only appearing at live events and shows predominated with jobber squashes.

Heel managers fulfilled the role storylinewise that authority figures do now.

Masked Kane...IN A TUXEDO. This is a recipe for ratings people, we all know it's what will/has to happen.

Way too many GM/authority figure storylines in the last year. Like entirely too many.

Obviously, the payoff to this angle will be:
Cena winning.

Big Poppa Pump, please! would be hysterical. I have a feeling it could turn out to be Big Show, though. "World's Largest GM!"

Under the watchful eyes of Big Johnny, Raw & Smackdown became destination television. What can be better then PEOPLE POWER? A red hot wires shoved through my urethra and threaded through my nipples being used to drag me behind an angry wild mustang with explosive diarrhea.

The whole fascination WWE has with authority figures lately is really out of control. WWE's biggest and best time ever revolved around the whole "I hate my boss" theme with Austin/McMahon, the common man standing up to The Man. The company has been trying, with very, very limited to success, to exploit that theme ever since. I know everybody looks back on the glory days with glee, but I remember being bored with Austin vs. The Boss variations very quickly. After a time, it wasn't that much different than the week-after-week same-old-same-old with the Stooges vs. Faces or Spirit Squad vs. Faces or HHH-Orton-Cena revolving door from 9:45 to 10:05 ad nauseum. Kind of like Russo forever trying to recreate the invasion, WWE has forever tried to recreate the Austin-McMahon dynamic with worker vs. boss. That is why the GM has become the foil and centerpiece for so many angles as McMahon has stepped away from a regular role as a character. And to some degree, you can't get around the GM being a major character. Back in the day it was the NWA or Jack Tunney pulling the strings to make matches and enforce "justice." Then it became the owner with McMahon, and now we're in the corporate era so it needs to be a CEO/COO/GM. I mean, there kayfabe has to be someone who decides who wrestles who and who gets title shots, etc.

What was wrong with that? It sounds boring, like most of the stuff that comes from 80's pro wrestling.

WWE's biggest and best time ever revolved around the whole "I hate my boss" theme with Austin/McMahon, the common man standing up to The Man. I get that, but you'd think after over a decade of trying to recreate the "top face vs. evil boss" storyline with no near the same amount of success, WWE would realize that Austin vs. McMahon is the kind of thing that can only be done once. There is. The never-seen Board of Directors that manages the company, and more often than not these days, makes decisions that overrule that of the General Managers, Triple H, and Vince McMahon. I see no reason why they can't make their announcements on wwe.com and just have Michael Cole repeat them for the audience at the beginning of each week. People don't pay money to see the authority figures, they pay to see the wrestlers. So why do need to see AJ skipping down to the ring every week and making obvious decisions?

They don't know what to do. As usual. So they have place holders now. Generally, this means going backwards. Which is always a bad thing. I am holding out for Flair just because he has been out of the Fed as an active player for so long. He can bring back Bautista as an enforcer. And, of course, the GMs are just another character with no real power, so it is just taking time away from in-ring activities.
