this is one of the most annoying counterarguements ever and is an awful defence.
I am not a professional sportsman, writer, actor, musician, entertainer etc so no I probably couldn't do better, that however is not a defence for something being bad.
I hate this so bloody much.

It's basically the argument of last resort when the only thing left is to just attack your opponent. It also doesn't work. To use an easy example, I may not know how to write, shoot, or edit a movie, but I still know that "Gigli" was a piece of hot garbage, and will criticize it as such.

Another enjoyable off-shoot of this kind of comment is this: At least they tried, what have you ever done?
Using that kind of logic, we'd all have to try everything in the Universe before judging anything.

My old boss said that to me one day. I still hate him for that.

Not only that, you're not being paid as a professional to make a movie. Even if you did make a movie and it sucked, it's not your job to make movies, and you don't have the resources that a lot of the big, horrible movies have.

"...and I'd like the salary that goes with it."
Of course, sometimes other people really could do better. I remember a local baseball game. There was a play in which everyone could see that the runner was out, and the umpire (the coach from one team, since there was a shortage of umpires) called him safe. One of the opposing coaches pointed out that the umpire was the only person on or around the field who thought that the runner was safe.
The umpire turned to the coach and said, "I'd like to see you do better." The coach stood up and said, "Gladly. Hand over the equipment. And you. (turns to runner on third) You're out." He called the rest of the game.

I only use this line when some know-it-all asshole is standing over your shoulder when you are trying to do something.
Example:
I'm filleting fish and the father-in-law giving me his 1004 pointers on how he does it better. I say, "I'd like to see you do better" and hand him the knife.
This is topped off by the fact that he can't do half the stuff he yapps about and his fillets look like !@#$%#.
Makes me feel good. But other than this specific example, I hate the line as well. It's the equivalent of "My dad can beat up your dad" on the playground.

The funny thing is you usually could, whatever it is. (maybe after a brioef training session)
More often than not, that argument belongs exclusively to jabronis that have obtained a modest amount of skill doing something just barely off the radar that they feel special about.
They don't have any particular aptitude for the discipline, they just mark for themself because they know something about something most don't and think that makes them cool.
If some Rock and Roll hall of fame drummer wants to tell me I can't play s***, okay.
If some guy that works at Quiznos wants to tell me I can't cook correctly, get f***ed.

This comeback should really only be used against snobs that would never actually 'lower' themselves to do the thing you'd "like to see them do better". For instance, your friend complains about the sucky attitude of the local McDonald's cashier so you say "I'd like to see you do a better job of being happy working at McDonald's!" knowing they would never take you up on that challenge.
Also works for countering lazy/craven people complaining about a dangerous job (i.e. whenever someone says something disrespectful about cops, military, hookers, etc.)

It's fine if you say it to someone criticising you I think, but in most circumstances it's a cop out.

If freaking Martin Scorsese challenges me to make a better movie, then yeah....I'm f***ed. But if some random dipshit on the internet uses that argument, it just means they don't have any better support.

Well, sometimes it does work.
Fine example: just a week or two ago on baseball practice, we were having free batting practice with a pitcher. None of us are anything good at it, but the guy is OK, but was having a night off as far as control goes, even for something as simple as that. One of the younger guys that trains with us was repeatedly on his case, nagging him. Argument made, the younger guy took over. Did worse. Never badmouthed again.
