Len Wiseman, the director that recently remade 'Total Recall', has signed on to direct the reboot of 'The Mummy' franchise.
Wiseman, who is also responsible for the 'Underworld' series, is joining with producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman for the project, who worked with Wiseman on the reboot of TV series 'Hawaii Five-0'.
But rather than the old fashioned, swash-buckling action that preceded it, with Brendan Fraser as adventurer Rick O'Connell, Wiseman says the myth will be retold in a darker fashion.
“When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well,” Wiseman told Deadline. “It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.
“One of the things that interested me with this mummy is, he’s still in essence a man. They haven’t turned his brain into a monster brain. He still has a personality and is very cunning and calculating.
“He’s a true character in any form, and in creature form, even if he is that staggering creature, it becomes more important that he’s a thinking, calculating person.”
Jon Spaihts, one of the writers of Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus', is on hand to pen the project.
“I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with 'Prometheus' to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before,” Spaihts told Variety.

Directed by the guy who screwed up Total Recall, written by the guy who screwed up Prometheus, and produced by the guys who (helped) screw up TransFormers.
Yeah, not got big hopes for this.
