I know people feel pretty strongly about the Nolan Batman films, so I'll just preface this by saying this is (of course) only my opinion:
I thought The Avengers absolutely destroyed DKR. Why? It was actually entertaining/fun to watch. I get that they were "a different brand of movie", but holy hell, I was struggling to make it through DKR. I went and seen the Avengers twice and bought the blu-ray on day one of its release. I wouldn't lose sleep if I never saw a minute of DKR again.

For me, Avengers only won financially. I still think TDKR was the better overall film, from a film perspective. Avengers was a better superhero film, though. But, as Friskey said, TDKR was more of a crime drama with people in costumes than an actual superhero film.

I'd say yes, because it delivered on everything it promised, whereas the common consensus about The Dark Knight Rises was that it was good, but it didn't meet expectations. The Avengers was always promised as being an exciting, action-packed movie where you'd get to see all the solo characters already established in their own films come together, and that's exactly what we got.
The Dark Knight Rises was advertised in the trailers as "The Epic Conclusion to the Dark Knight Legend", and I think that set the bar far too high for a film that was directly following a cinematic juggernaut like The Dark Knight.
