During the Punk/JR segment..
(Paraphrasing)
"WHO'S GOING TO SAVE YOU!?" "YOU HAVE NO FRIENDS!" "YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN!"
I was actually sat watching, talking to the TV..
"COME ON SWAGGER!" "SWAGGER! SWAGGER! SWAGGER!"
I could almost hear his theme music start in my head at points in that promo.
I was so disappointed when Ryback's music finally hit. I guess it makes the most sense but it would have made for a great pop and I think a CM Punk vs Jack Swagger match would have been great, even if Swagger lost tonight, or in a couple of weeks before the PPV.
I'm not saying Swagger is a great draw or would make a great face, but it just seemed like a great moment that could have happened that was just simply not capitalised on and lost tonight.

I agree and it would have been as good as a moment as ever to have him return Face and protect JR but sadly that was not the case.

It would have been too obvious and done nothiing storyline-wise in any way.
I think Ryback is the fallback if Cena is not ready for the PPV. And if Cena is ready, it's just good exposure for Ryback's build to have him interacting with the champ in a threatening way.
If there are any plans to really push a retooled Swagger when he comes back, those plans probably don't include getting him beat by CM Punk on the night he returns.
It's a danged if you do, danged if you don't situation -- if Swagger appears, a lot of people will say it was too obvious, anyone could see it from 1,000 miles away; if it's not Swagger, someone comes along and says WWE blew it.

I agree with your views on Ryback.
However, I think a competitive hometown loss against the WWE Champion could have done a lot for Swagger, actually.
Either a "comes close but not quite good enough tonight" or an interference finish by Heyman would make Swagger look like a future challenger and not hurt Punk in the slightest.
