If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Yes, fourteen years after the Roland Emmerich directed American Godzilla movie, there is work being done for a retry. What is known so far: David Callaham ( Doom, The Expendables) wrote an early draft of the script. As did David Goyer ( Dark City, Blade, The Dark Knight). Most recently, Drew Pearce ( Iron Man 3, Sherlock Holmes 3) was said to be doing last minute rewrites before casting begins. It's said that this will "return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner." The Director will be Gareth Edwards who also helmed the low-budgeted sci-fi/romance alien invasion flick Monsters. It is being produced by "Legendary Pictures" and "Warner Bros" and they're hoping for a May 2014 release. Source: www.upcominghorrormovies.com/movie/godzilla...I chuckle every single time I read "gritty" and "realistic" used now-a-days. I'll give them a benefit of the doubt, but it'll take some amazing hype here in a year or so for me to even consider going to theaters for another American Godzilla film. Goodness knows (since they haven't even cast) what will happen from here, but here's a topic to discuss randomly!

The last Godzilla US movie was supposed to be "gritty and realistic" and it ended up being stupid and moronic. Godzilla is a giant dragon like monster who breathes radioactive fire, destroys cities, and fights other giant monsters. There's nothing realistic about any of that.

The thing is Godzilla is probably the easest script to write, because no one gives a damn about the human characters that much, they are merely there for expositon.
I want to see Godzilla appear, have some speculation why and then for Godzilla to demolish the whole of New York with atomic fire and general rage, defeat the entire army and then be driven back into the sea by some scientific plot device leaving only devestation behind, so he can then come back for the sequel involving another monster.
All the money goes on the speical effects. No need for big name actors, no comedy hijinks, no army being successful, no came here to breed nonsense, no pointles sub-plots for minor characters and certainly no hiding in a subway system.
So easy, how could anyone screw it up.

Being pedantic, he doesn't breathe fire *adjusts glasses*
I am holding out hope. Partly because it can't be much worse to Godzilla than the '98 one.

So with gritty and realistic does that mean Godzilla's roar will be much lower in tone and instead of just running down buildings, he will use stealth and precise fire breath?? I'm not giving this movie the benefit of the doubt........this movie is going to suck. I thought the same about the new Dredd movie and I was very surprised.

Really, guys? You're ready to write this movie off as being terrible when casting hasn't even begun yet? As long as Godzilla is... Godzilla (you know, unlike 1998)... then I don't see the problem with wanting to take it a bit more seriously. Not that I've ever thought it was necessary, but I don't think it's such a bad thing either.
The realism (or rather, believability) obviously isn't going to come from Godzilla himself. The realism Edwards, who's said that he intends to explore the question of "what if Godzilla appeared in our world", is talking about will most likely come from the reactions of the government and the population at large as well as the world they live in. That's not exactly a direction that's new to the series (the original, The Return of Godzilla... even Godzilla 2000 and the fantastical GMK treat the world these monsters exist in and the reactions of the populace as "real", even if the premise is silly).
"Gritty and Realistic" could also just be a way for Legendary to tell the audience that their Godzilla won't be as outlandish at the late-'60s/1970s Godzilla movies - meaning no aliens, underground civilizations, tiny fairies, or Jet Jaguar. Since that's the version of Godzilla most would be familiar with, besides the 1998 one, that could be what most are expecting from him. And I love those movies, and would love a throwback to them, but if Legendary wants to move away from that, then it would make sense for them to emphasize how different their take on Godzilla is.

if it's godzilla who stops a city or 5 for the hell of it & eating humans occasionally only stopping when his territory is invaded by another monster.
thats the core of a good godzilla movie to me.

So Godzilla can't be gritty. Below are spoilers for a Godzilla film: {Spoiler}So he can't cause total destruction that leaves citizens living in refugee camps. orphans children, destroys families, leaving nuclear fallout, and radiation poisoning. Or the only way to destroy him is a weapon so deadly that it's creator is reluctant to use it fearing it will fall into the wrong hands, and when he is talked into using it he destroys his lab and research and then commits suicide to prevent anyone ever using this weapon again. Yes this all happened in a Godzilla movie... This one: {Spoiler} sorry it's in a spoiler tab because it's a little on the large size. Fitting

But yeah............I don't trust the egotistical minds of Hollywood to do Godzilla right. But if this movie is bad, I may not even need a poll to determine the 2014 Godzilla In Name Only (GINO) Award for worst movie involving a monster
