For the people that have seen the new Spider-Man, was it better or worse than the original 2002 version? Personally, I think it is really close.
Both movies has the strong and weak points. I actually liked Tobey in 2002 Spider-Man, but I felt Andrew Garfield gave the stronger performance. Also, I never cared for Mary Jane, so Gwen was a much better love interest. It's one of the rare superhero movies now that I actually liked the female love interest character. Garfield and Stone had real good chemistry with each other and I bought their romance.
However, the thing that killed 2012 Spider-Man was the villian. Dr.Conors/The Lizard was an awful character. I didn't sympathize with him and was very under-developed. Plus I didn't like the CG design and his motivation/big master plan is just so stupid imo. Say what you will about Green Goblin and the "Power Rangers" costume, but I thought the Lizard was just an awful villian.
I felt both movies' Aunt May and Uncle Ben was well casted and played. Also, both orgin stories were told nicely. The action set pieces were about the same (not comparing CG because that isn't fair).
Overall, both movies were good, but I feel 2012 Spider-Man barely edges out because of Garfield and Stone's performance.

I love the original trilogy. Obviously 1 and 2 more so than 3. I've lost count of how many times I've watched them.
All that said, I didn't think it was close. This is one of the best superhero movies I've ever seen. 2012 is in that Iron Man and Dark Knight realm for me. The original trilogy couldn't touch this for my money.

New one. It is close, though, and each has some advantages over the other. Plus the main flaw of both is the villain, though inclined to give that particular honor to the original since Goblin was fun, just not very intimidating and you can't take him seriously, while Lizard is pretty flat and never comes off as much of a threat. Also I kept mentally calling him Croc.

Damn it, you made me think Critic had done an Old vs. New of this. That I'd like to see.

did not care for this new one at all. The Lizard is terrible by any standard, but this version is possibly the worst and most pointless villain ever in a movie of this type.
I was pleasantly surprised by Andrew Garfield though. I was all ready to hate that guy, but he's pretty good.

The Lizard is the main villain of the new one? He was my least favourite too. Haven't seen it but I may do so soon.

I really enjoyed the second movie, and I virulently loathed the third. I enjoyed the new one. Let's call it a push.

The new version is better in every way.
I still like the '02 version as well, there's much I still really love about it; but the one that just came out takes the good of the original and improves it in every possible way.

I dunno if I'd say every way. Definitely a lot of ways which is why I prefer it, but the big advantage the first has to me is that it's a lot more focused. Amazing just sort of seems to move from one scene to another, often without any real focus to it. Hell, even Uncle Ben's death (it's Uncle freaking Ben, that's not a spoiler) comes off as completely unnecessary and only really done because, hey, it's Uncle Ben. Speaking of, something that bugged me about it - {Spoiler}I was really annoyed at the presence of a bittersweet ending. Honestly, that makes four movies in a row of this, though admittedly 2 kind of straddled the line - is it too much to have a Spidey movie that ends outright happily just once?

I don't know, I just thought that the new one pretty well improved on everything. Like I said though, I still like the originals, this one just raise the bar to me. Uncle Ben's death seemed to resonate just as much to me, though I will concede that they seemed to have a bit more time in the first one to develop that more, so maybe not EVERYTHING was better, but pretty near. as to the spoiler {Spoiler} Was it really that bittersweet though? The little scene in the classroom where he whispered to Gwen seemed to pretty well turn what was going to be a bittersweet ending on its ear. I.E. though it looked like they weren't gonna date, him mentioning a promise that he couldn't keep, and her smiling seem a pretty clear indication that it's not gonna be that bittersweet after all. Although I guess if you're including Captain Stacy's death in the ending then it still is.

{Spoiler}Though, hasn't it always been the point of the character that, yeah he's a superhero and he can save the day, but his life still royally sucks?

It is so odd to refer to a film made in 2002 as the "Old."

2012 was better for the sheer fact that Spider-Man acted like Spider-Man. I think the previous franchise was Sam Raimi making a Spider-Man that was essentially him, rather than the character from the comics. The new film had the familiar wise-cracking Spidey that everyone loves.

The original Spiderman Trilogy is in a category with the X-Men movies before First Class. Good at the time, still enjoyable, but haven't aged well due to improvements in special effects and a greater emphasis on quality in comic book movies. They also took a precipitous nosedive in the third movie.
The new one is in the same realm as the Marvel Studios movies and the Nolan Batmans. It is a step tier up in quality. Much more solid, all around, in just about every way.

Spiderman 2 is leaps and bounds better than the 2012 version.
