...just so I can understand some of my Japanese games I've bought on PSN. (Policenauts, Sonic Wings Special, etc.) Anyone else taken Japanese classes and found them worthwhile?

Are you taking them at a real college? Or is it some kind of workshop type thing?

Then as long as you have a good teacher, and you're able to pick up the language, you should have no problem and it'd be a good idea if you want to learn more about those games you play.

I learnt Japanese at school, it's an awesome and beautiful language to learn. The tricky part is learning Kanji I found, but hiragana and katakana were easy. For me it felt like learning a code, and it comes in handy for anime and stuff Good luck with it.

Katakana alone got me through the better part of VPW2 and Kings of Colosseum II.
I did 2 (maybe 3?) semesters in college.....don't remember a thing now.
Also did 2 years of French in high school. Remember even less. Partially because my first year teacher was a senile nun, requiring us to repeat virtually all of the first year's material with her competent replacement the next year.

I live and work in Japan now, study abroad is what got me fluent. If you're just taking a regular college class, a lot of the stuff you learn from the get-go probably won't be too helpful with games. My advice is to study on your own outside of class, and incorporate something like a J-drama or too to help you get used to the Japanese people actually use.
Are these games you want help with mostly voiced or do you just want to be able to read them?

I took Japanese in college. The hardest part for me was all the grammar. Kanji wasn't so difficult, vocabulary was just memorization based, but the grammar sucked because you had to remember both formal and informal tenses and had to use different structures to say things like "I want" or When I was a child". Katakana isn't bad when you deal with common words; however, it can be difficult when you have to read or write words like "cheese" or "France", which may have tricky letter combinations or are shortened.

I learned Spanish in High School, have been self-teaching myself German, and have dabbled in Japanese. It's obviously easier to fully learn a language with mostly identical grammar and writing than one without but I would like to learn more Japanese.
