Out there right now? I seriously can't think of any mainstream band that comes close to them, I seriously can't.
IMO, their music has only gotten better with every record. "El Camino" may sound too polished and over-produced for some - but I still think they're the most unique mainstream rock band out there right now. Their sound has a vintage feel to it, but it feels fresh at the same time - it doesn't sound like they're trying to sound like they're from the 70's like some other vintage-tinted bands do (IMO).
So, in your opinion, are The Black Keys the best mainstream rock band out there? If not, who do you nominate?

I loved Vice Verses by Switchfoot.
Also I'm With You by RHCP is criminally underrated.

Muse at their rockiest are simply amazing, but I think The Black Keys are better at being an all around rock band.

Foo Fighters in my opinion. I don't dislike the Black Keys, but I don't love them either. They just exist to me. However, Foo Fighters have gotten better and better over the years. They've been on fire recently.

I hate to be "that guy".... but I'm gonna have to be for a second just to clear my own conscience in saying there's no way to be the "best" at any point in any way for something as subjective as music.
Anyway... while I don't like them, I do think they have a ton of momentum right now and are definitely one of the bigger acts in the mainstream right now.

Yeah I'm with BlindSlayer, saying a band is 'the best' is a silly thing considering the varied taste in music.
Regardless though I personally love them, the blues styled rock is just so good.

I like the Black Keys, but Jack White's solo album/live show blows the Black Keys away.

I gotta be honest here, I hate all these bands. I've heard a couple songs by the White Stripes that I liked, but that's not even current. I would maybe say somebody that's getting old like Weezer or RHCP but they haven't done anything good in a long time (that I've heard). I've also heard a couple songs by the Hives that were ok, don't know if they're still around. I like Dexter Romweber Duo a lot and they have some famous fans like Jack White and Neko Case, but I don't think they've had any hit songs or anything that would be enough to qualify them as mainstream.
You can call me a "hipster" or whatever you want (even though I'm pretty sure I'm too old to be that) but rock 'n' roll has moved underground, and even there is not exactly at it's peak.

I'd normally say Muse, since they're one of my favorites. But the new album is terrible.

Nah. They're good and all, but nothing special. I like them, and El Camino was good, but at the end of the day, they don't bring anything new to the table. They're a fairly derivative blues rock band

there's really not a lot of competition out there. I don't care for the Black Keys, I don't dislike them but I won't go out of my way for them, same goes for Muse but it doesn't bother me that they're popular like a lot of other stuff does.
Dave Grohl and Jack White carry the flag pretty well, though I'm still kind of annoyed at Dave Grohl at the Grammy's slagging off digital music, only to play with Deadmau5, but I digress. Thank God for the internet because mainstream rock is really hurting right now.

I don't think Grohl was talking about electronic music so much as the abusing of auto-tune and a number of pop acts just being complete studio/production creations. Oh yeah. It sucks but there's a few good tracks. I bet some of the new stuff would sound awesome live though. I can see that. Muse is absolutely incredible live and they can make songs I thought were meh on the albums sound amazing performed live. Hope they can do it with some of the stuff on the new album. But out of all the Muse albums out there, I think people who throw out the otherwise tired and false "they're a Radiohead ripoff!" complaint have somewhat of a case with this album.

Maybe, and I don't so much mind that he even performed with Deadmau5, for the sake of doing something different. Jowever, whether his whole tirade didn't include electronic music I just don't think that was the night to get on his soapbox when that performance was on the horizon. Just came off really hypocritical to me.

How is it hypocritical if he wasn't talking about electronic music in the first place? I don't remember him using T-Pain levels of auto-tune during it.
Also I'm pretty sure he clarified on either his Twitter or during an interview that he likes a lot of electronic music and that he's a big fan of Deadmau5 and Skrillex.

After reading about them for a while I decided to listen to those youtube clips posted earlier. Consider me a fan.
Also Jack White's new stuff blows the White Stripes stuff out of the water IMO.

I think for main stream music, electronic stuff, hip hop, modern r & b, etc. is where people are being innovative and doing cool shit. All the good rock and country music has moved underground, and even then you have to wade through a lot of crap since everybody thinks they can do it now.
