Do you say it the right way, or the wrong way?

I either say "I could care less" or "I could not possibly care less", but I don't say "I couldn't care less." Which makes no sense, obviously, but it's kind of a meta thing with "I could care less"... like, I am so over this that I don't even care enough to add the second syllable onto this word, because you already know what I mean, you dumb person that I don't care about.

I wouldn't be surprised if the expression started off as "I could care less, but not much", or as a sarcastic statement, but was warped over time. That seems more likely to me than the loss of "not" from the statement alone.

I say "couldn't" but the other way can make sense if you just emphasize the words differently.
If you say "I could care less" it sounds like a mildly sarcastic and patronizing version of "I couldn't care less", which of course is just a hyperbolic way of saying "I don't care at all".

I don't know who says, "I could care less." At least half the people on this board and virtually every North American I know on Facebook and Twitter.

I say "could." It is meant as a sarcastic statement, seriously.

I could care less about this thread. So that means you would care about this thread? I care a small portion because it's possible for me to have less care about the subject. I don't see the problem with my statement.

I don't know who says, "I could care less." Dumb people, and people who are being sarcastic. Mostly dumb people, though.
