I'm not starting this thread up to have arguments, but I cannot understand all the Joey Styles love.
I think he's actually an average announcer.
I have several ECW tapes, and to me he just seems like a screamer. I thought he did an OK job at Taboo Tuesday, but if I had the choice I would pick JR and Lawler over Lawler and Styles anyday of the week.
I've never hid the fact that I think ECW was maybe a little bit overrated, but that's a debate for another day.

I like Joey Styles because he always calls the action and concentrates on the matches rather than talking about things that have nothing to do with the match. He is always on top of things.
What I don't like about him is when he goes into those raspy falsetto screams. I find them extremely irritating.

I kind of agree with you that Styles seems overrated. Yes, he does have passion when he does commentary, and unlike announcers of today, actually brings up the past. If he was the one who got set on fire by Kane, Styles would never shut up about it.
However, I think that while he's ok by himself, he's not that great when partnered up with someone, as they usually mess up his rythym because he's too busy talking up a storm.

I think Joey has a great knowledge of the wrestling moves, and therefore is a great play by play man. Joey ranks up there with Mike Tenay when it comes to calling even the most obscure of holds.

It's because he used to work for ECW and some people do wear ridiculously rose coloured glasses when it comes to everything ECW.

Or else ECW actually was good and the other people wear brown colored glasses when looking at ECW.
Joey Styles is actually quite good when he doesn't scream his head off, and he's pretty knowledgeable about wrestling moves n' junk.

Yeah, exactly, that is why Styles is good. It's not his voice, its his knowledge, and his ability to know how to put things over. He needs to stop the screams and all, thats about the only problem.
I still don't know why he was the second choice to Mike "I Don't Even Like Wrestling" Goldberg. Ugh.

ECW as a whole - overrated now. Where were all these fans when ECW was actually around?
Joey Styles - Pretty damn impressive at Taboo Tuesday. His knowledge of the wrestlers and the moves they were performing won me over. I'd like to see him take JR's spot as the full time announcer.

Ive always loved Styles and ECW. I guess I can see where he screams some, but honestly if an announcer has just seen someone caught on fire its not really unfitting to be enthusiastic.

ECW as a whole - overrated now. Where were all these fans when ECW was actually around? Exactly!!! People just follow what everyone else say about something even when they have no vast knowledge about it or have even watched it...I bet 90% of the people who chant "ECW" were introduced to ECW through the DVD that WWE made. Sheep I tell you.

When ECW was actually around, it was more of an underground thing. Now that it's gone, it's built a legacy. Think about it. Whenever something dies, it always becomes bigger or more liked that it was when it was around. ECW falls under this.

I personally watched it whenever I could. Watched it in syndication. Watched it on dvd and video. Watched it on TNN. Bought PPV's. Hell I bought the magazine and the crappy video game. From the time I first watched it in 96 untill it folded in early 01 I was a fan....so dont paint me with the "sheep" brush.

Well...I've been a fan ever since 2000, just when they were dying out. But I studied up on tapes, net vids and so on, and at least rented the crappy video game.

As with most things it's probably somewhere in the middle of both views. Styles is good, but yeah I'll agree he's slightly overrated, I think if people got to see Styles all the time the love would diminish a bit. Personally, when JR is 'on' and not doing the cliches we all love to goof on but is actually calling a match with emotion and playing it straight- to me there's no one better. Tha's just me.

I was actually among the many fans who really wanted to see ECW, but didn't get it in my area. I basically saw a few episodes of their TV show on tape.
I really believe that if ECW was on cable from 95-97, they would have been able to compete with WWF and WCW. Those were the glory years.

I personally think its kind of silly to use the "you probably never watched ECW so you dont know what youre talking about "argument; being that noone knows from poster to poster how long they have been a fan.

amen
besides so much of this stuff falls under the pesky category of personal opinion. If someone doesn't think for example EC dub is as great as you do or thinks its the best ever.. it doesn't mean they 'don't get it' or are anymore or less of a fan.
diff'rent strokes.
it's called opinion for a reason.

Of course. I dont have the slightest problem with people who dont like Ecw or TNA or ROh as much as I do..or whom like WWE more than me. Im no more right or wrong for liking what I do. What it does prove, to me, is that there is room for more than one product. I personally dont want to see WWE do anything but succeed even if i dont watch much of it. I also hope that TNA and ROh can maintain themselves to be good alternatives who like that type of wrestling.
