That bit of booking is still pretty baffling. They'd been pushing Orlando fairly strongly, and the PPV before that he beat Benoit, then suddenly they had the out-of-nowhere tap-out and made what a joke he was the entirety of his gimmick, yet when he was against someone other than Benoit he still generally looked fairly strong.

I think they were trying to undo the ridiculousness of that PPV where he beat Benoit (GAB 2005). Orlando was doing straight up nothing for so long and Benoit stepped up. It just made complete sense for Benoit to beat him and for Orlando to fade into the background as he was offering nothing.

I like to think after that win they realized "We just had Orlando Jordan beat Chris Benoit. WHAT HAVE WE DONE!?" and then perhaps fallen on their knees yelling to the sky. Then they tried to fix it as best as they could.

That OJ/Benoit match at GAB 2005 is one of the most baffling booking finishes I've seen since I started watching wrestling.
