The story goes that Chief Jay Strongbow told him that Vince McMahon had a list of 6 people to take the title of Flair, three of them circled (as the main possibilities). I say we use our smark knowledge, and finally figure this out, as it has been driving me crazy for years. Here is a list of the active roster in 1992:
Tito Santana, "The Brooklyn Steve Lombardi, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Jim Powers, "The Birdman" Koko B. Ware, "The Model" Rick Martel, The Repo Man, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase, Virgil, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Shawn Michaels, The Big Boss Man, "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig, Luke Williams, Butch Miller, Typhoon, Earthquake, Paul "Kato" Diamond, The Undertaker, Brian Knobbs, Jerry Saggs, "The Mountie" Jauques Rougeau, "The Berzerker" John Nord, Mike "I.R.S." Rotundo, Beau Beverly, Blake Beverly, "Skinner" Steve Keirn, "Tatanka" Chris Chavis, "The Rocket" Owen Hart, Barry Horowitz, Papa Shango, Kevin "Nailz" Kelly, Crush, Fatu, Samu, Scott "Razor Ramon" Hall, Bob Backlund, Yokozuna, Steve "Lance Cassidy" Armstrong, Matt "Doink the Clown" Borne, "Terrific" Terry Taylor, Damian Demento, Marty Jannetty.
So obviously, Bret is on there, and according to shoot interviews, Tito Santana was on there as well (?!). I don't think Vince would put in on a heel, or right back on Savage..So can we piece together the rest of this puzzle?
1. Bret Hart 2. Tito Santana 3. The Undertaker (?) 4. Crush (?) 5. Big Boss Man (?) 6. Tatanka (?)

Well according to the McMahon DVD Rick Martel was one of those.

Why not Martel? He was a former World Champion in the AWA, and had a long career with the company. If he had won the title in 1992 instead of Hart, we may be calling him a legend now.

I wouldn't be surprised if Papa Shango were one of them. They seemed really determined for years to make him into a top guy.

I forget for certain, but I'm pretty sure it was...
Bret Hart Tito Santana Rick Martel The Big Boss Man Tatanka and...
I'm totally blanking on the last one. I think Mr. Perfect.

All kinda fuels the fire to say that Vince wasn't ever fully supportive of Bret's reign from the get-go, doesn't it.
Especially if it became a toss up between Bret and Martel who, with the greatest of respect to him by Fall of 1992 was about 18 months removed from anything significant in the WWF. Aside from that match with HBK at SS 92. Which was the first thing I recall him doing since the feud with Jake over a year earlier.

Interesting..I didnt think Vince would be too keen on doing a heel vs. heel title change, but maybe he had some face turns in mind. I could see Backlund as a possibility as well, due to his history.

Tito was a great wrestler, so was Martel, but really, Hart was the only choice. How they'd proper those up into main eventers I'll never know.

They went with Bret so we'll never know how the others could have gone as champ

Backlund had to be on the list, he was already a credible champion before, and he showed that he could still go at the 92 Rumble, I'm sure they would of put it on him for a few months while the built up a new program.

Man, my head would have exploded if Martel got the title, even if he got an "Undertaker run", setting up a future feud with Hart, which I think would have been great. Hart winning it from Flair always seemed a little weird for some reason, I can't explain it.

I remember seeing a list like this somewhere and I am fairly certain this was it. I know Tatanka was on it as well as Tito.

No one else makes any sense other than Mr. Perfect, since they went to that program anyway afterwards.

Surely HBK was on the list given that he was being given PPV title shots later that year. He couldn't have been far off.

I would have thought Undertaker would be on list but I'm not sure if he was heel or face at the time tho.

Rick Martel would have been as good choice as Bret Hart and I am a superbiased Hart mark. Martel is easily the most underated potential main event material, shame it didn't work out.
Could you imagine The Model in attitude era together with let's say Rick Rude. DX would never stand a chance.

He was in an 'okay' tag team then he became an 'okay' midcarder, the number of top feuds he had being counted on the fingers of half of a hand. It's not to say he wasn't a solid worker and a good character - but let's not lavish undue praise on the man.
