I think it's safe to say that these are the two most iconic moments in Hulkamania history (though I've added an "other" option for those that disagree), but which one do you associate with him the most? The slam heard around the world or the heel turn?

Slamming Andre skyrocketed pro wrestling to the mainstream pop culture. It might very well be the most iconic moment in pro wrestling period. Decades out, I'll bet that plenty of people can still at least vaguely recall that match. I doubt many people actually remember much about the nWo; I'm talking casual fans, BTW.

If not Hogan slamming Andre, then Hogan pinning the Iron Sheik for the belt.

Choking out Richard Belzer. This. That jackass deserved it too. It's unfortunate he made such a big stink about it afterwards...what a baby.

Hogan vs Andre was the first national bout between two guys who were genuinely household names.
Hogan was a household name long before 1987. He was on Carson's show in 1982 let's not forget. Andre was a household name because of who he was. The greatest attraction in wrestling's history to that point. It was a different kind of exposure to Hogan's. But he was a household name nonetheless. He was to wrestling what Hulk Hogan was to become.
'Name a wrestler' - the answer would be Andre.
So it was the first real titanic match between two household names. Hence why over 30m people tuned in for the re-match a year later, when Andre's star had been starting to fade.
At that time, 1987, both Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant as draws and as attractions were bigger than the company itself. It wouldn't remain that way, but at the time it was. If we go back to WM1 - although Piper was known for working in other territories and he gained a following through that, it was the WWF that essentially gave him the national exposure. Therefore 'created' him in that sense.
Hogan and Andre were two stars who's global/national recognition outstripped that of the company they worked for in 1987. Therefore the biggest 'moment' of the era, has to be the moment these two icons of popular culture clashed inside a WWF wrestling ring. And weren't WWF fortunate enough to have them both at that time? I'd say so.

I heard that Bobby Heenan's pay-off for being in the main event was $300,000

I heard that Bobby Heenan's pay-off for being in the main event was $300,000 And he earned every penny. Andre the Giant literally didn't say a word for 2 months after the announcement of the main event. Imagine if today The Rock took on Cena in the main event and The Rock never said a word. And it drew 93,000 people. It wasn't Hogan vs Andre, it was Hogan vs Heenan's ultimate unstoppable plan which just happened to be the established Andre.

nWo.
Not that Andre wasn't a huge deal (No pun intended) but the nWo in my opinion is the hottest angle in all of wrestling and lasted 4 years on TV and was a draw for most of that time.
Andre was a huge moment but it didn't really do anything for Hulk, Hulk would of been loved whether he slammed Andre or not.
