So I'm trying to update my Adobe Reader. When I keep getting this pop up
"The following applications are using files that need to be updated by this set up. Close these applications and click retry to continue. Adobe Reader 7.0"
How am I supposed to close the application when it needs to be open to update?

My suggestion is to uninstall Reader completely from the Control Panel and then download the new version and install it fresh instead of updating. 7.0 is 4 versions behind so there may be some kind of issue trying to upgrade from that far behind.

Do you know what the newest version is? I'm trying to fix this computer for someone and they have it a mess. Edit: GAHHHHHH I just deleted adobe 7 and it's just sitting there says 0 time remaining to delete but it's just chilling.

XI is the newest. If you just go to the Adobe website and click on Adobe Reader that'll be the version it installs. If it's really screwed up, the best thing may be just to nuke it from orbit and reinstall Windows if there's a disk. If not, then you might want to look at getting a copy of Hiren's Boot Disc burnt. It's free and really helpful. You just basically burn it and then boot the PC with the disc in it. You can then load Mini XP and you'll be able to run all sorts of useful apps from it to try and get it cleaned up. I use it at work all the time (I'm an IT monkey).

I got the problem thanks. I usually hate working on other people computers for them but I said I'd give it a shot. I got all the issues I was having taken care of. But she has every version of Java she ever updated still in her control panel, tons of toolbars she doesn't use (some that can't be removed) and a half ton of add ons and extensions that she doesn't even know why she has them. I can't do much more for if she can't give me a little more information. But on a good note. She can now do what she wants on the net. How do you get someone to understand why updating is important?

Well, it's pretty hard to do if they just don't care about it. Which is most people. The easiest way to do it is to just try and set as many things to automatically update as possible so it stays reasonably up to date in spite of her. I feel your pain.
