Why DO you black out when you lose a battle? Are you that severely psyched out from losing? Do the attacks of the last enemy Pokemon get to you? Why doesn't anyone else?
What was so hard about having the game just say that you're giving the other trainer half of your money as prize money (like the later games do) and that you had to go back to a Pokecenter or wherever to heal your team?
It just seems like something that unnecessarily makes your player character seem really wimpy-willed.

They don't do that anymore. What happens now is that you rush to the nearest Pokemon Center.

Drama. Same reason that the human characters in the Yu-Gi-Oh anime would sometimes physically recoil or collapse after they lost battles, even though the monsters are technicaly just holograms.

Better question - for awhile, why did they change it to say you whited out? What the hell does "whited out" even mean?

I guess it's because you take wins and losses personally. In some Japanese Pokemon novel, it's said that people who set out to become Pokemon Trainers and fail end up as homeless washouts for the rest of their lives, so they're dead serious about making it big.
