Goku, easily. He was the first and seeing his best friend killed in cold blood with no chance of bringing him back to life is for me the best motive than just simple determination or anger. Agreed. Only Goku and Trunks ever had good reasons to go Super Saiyan in my opinion. Everyone else's felt like a cop-out.

Probably Goku's because I'm sure at the time, no one really saw what one looked like coming, and it was a "holy shit" moment for the viewers.
Semi-related but...you think it was bad in the show with how many Super Saiyans there were? Look up the game Dragonball Online under the "humans" listing.
...yeah...

The History of Trunks is the darkest arc in the entire Dragonball franchise without question. It's a far cry from the original intent of the first Dragonball manga which was supposed to be a short-lived gag comic for Shonen Jump. Yet still, it never felt like it was that drastic a tone from the rest of the series to me. That's what makes it so good in my opinion. In a world of adventure, humor, and hope, the History of Trunks was just...depressing. It was an alternate look into the series, one that asked "What if everything didn't always end with sunshine and rainbows?". There was no happy ending, just a grim reality (just basing off of the special, of course). I think that's why it's my favorite Dragonball movie/special. That, and I also really dig the Androids. In the end, Trunks did help save the present time and rid his time of the Androids and Cell for good. So there was somewhat of a happy ending for the overall arc but yeah, not in the special. You're right there.

When your motive is being unable to sleep as a newborn baby, that has to win. It's just so bizarre.

Wait, are we forgetting Soulja Boy's motivation?
Swag, swag, he look like Vince McMahon. When he get that money he look like Peter Pan.

I voted Vegeta. The guy put himeself through hell to become a super saiyan, training harder than anyone else just to achive his childhood dream and you couldn't help but feel sorry for the guy when it meant nothing and he got beat down by Android 18.

But then we got this: I'd say Vegeta is as much of an inspiration as Goku. His motives may be considered "wrong", but he never gives up on his goal, even when he's knocked down, he just continues to better himself.

I don't feel like his motives were "wrong", I know they tried to portray it that way but I never saw anything wrong with trying to be the best.
