*Nothing Jack White - I hate that guy with a burning passion. We have some pretty diverse musical tastes here on the FAN, so I just thought I'd throw my net out there and see what I can catch. I love bands that sound like The Black Keys - just raw and simple, but I'm having a hard time finding similar bands that don't sound generic. So, what can you guys suggest?

Gary Clark, Jr. I hear lots of people (YouTube commenters) erroneously declare him to be a rip off of the Black Keys, but he's a bluesman with a rock 'n' roll sound.
Reignwolf is the most awesome up-and-coming artist of 2012. Bar none. In this video, he's singing, guitaring, and drumming on his own, with no help. I'm seeing him next month here in Columbus. Dude owns hard.
Mount Carmel's a band from Columbus with a really blues-y sound as well.

They're not EXACTLY like The Black Keys, but they've got that raw, bluesy sound like them.

Let's go with one current recommendation and one old-school dude:
Purling Hiss
George Thorogood
If you really want more recs, I can dish, but I've noticed the vast majority of music recommendation threads just end up in a wasteland of people posting YouTube clips and names that nothing ever comes of.

I really miss home (I almost threw on this shirt tonight -- www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=42628417). Where do you live in C-Bus and do you ever go to shows there? I have been to nearly every place there up until I moved a year and a half ago. I'll be back there in mid-December and can't wait.

Some of the classics: THE CRAMPS: FLAT DUO JETS: GUN CLUB: THE STOOGES: So much goodness. I love the Gun Club's "For the Love of Ivy." Japandroids recently did a ridiculously solid cover of it for their new record.

Yeah, I fully endorse the recommendation of both Iggy Pop and The Stooges. If you want to dig up other older stuff George Thorogood and the Destroyers also had a ton of good stuff. You might also like Bob Seiger, though that is not quite in the same vein.

I agree. Seger probably has some early demos and live recordings that would be along similar lines, but as far as his popular stuff definitely not.
Which reminds me, there are some live recordings of the original Alice Cooper band from 1969 that have been released numerous times under different titles with different packaging that for the most part are really raw live renditions of songs from early albums like "Pretties For You". Those first couple studio albums are really raw and weird too. People who are only familiar with Alice from "I'm Eighteen" up through today might be really surprised how noisy his early stuff was. It sounded closer to Iggy and the Stooges than, say, KISS or T-Rex.
Another really good basic rock and roll band that hasn't been brought up yet is the New York Dolls. They released two studio albums, the first one was just about perfect if maybe just a tad too polished. The second one is more spotty but has some good songs and is worth getting if you're a fan. They're also one of the bands that you could probably find a lot of live recordings of, some might be official but most are probably bootleg, and they could range in quality anywhere from amazing to totally non-listenable. Solo material by David Johansen and Johnny Thunders is also worth exploring.
Really there have been tons of great bands who fit this mold. Since I can't go into detail about each one I'm just gonna wrap up this post with a list of some of the other bands that haven't been mentioned but might appeal to fans of this type of stuff:
The Troggs, Fear, Buzzcocks, Lime Spiders, The Monks, We The People, The Sonics, The Ramones, Crime, early Screaming Trees, The Flesheaters, Electric Prunes, 13th Floor Elevators, Joe Clay, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Blondie, Hasil Adkins, Angry Samoans, Velvet Underground (first 2 albums), The Queers, The Clash's first album (self-titled), The Dictators, and too many more to mention!

Oh, and I totally forgot to mention my own band! Might as well since this is actually kind of an appropriate thread for it. We're sort of a mutated psychedelic take on rockabilly and the blues in our own way as well. This song was released last month on a free online comp: music.itavrecords.com/track/were-gonna-drink-his-bloodThe label that put that up does 3-way splits every month so there's a lot of other music that I think can be (legally) downloaded for free if anybody's interested. I really like the description the guy from the label wrote of our band. It makes the band sound really interesting (he even used a couple words I'm not sure I know what they mean), I just hope we live up to it! He had this to say: Chaz Brackx and The Big Bucks are not here to deliver a gentle gospel tune about the sacrament of communion. "We're Gonna Drink His Blood" may run its fingers over the touchstones of Country-and-Western's twangy folks-isms and it may even read on paper as a pious hymn to transubstantiation, but when the harmonica and guitar go entirely sideways and run roughshod over the melody, they channel a sort of atonal, dissonant psych vein of their own that has as little to do with flower power as it does with rustling cattle. If this is relijun, it's an ancient one from when we had flippers. The truly "psychedelic" can straddle that line between wholesome and vampiric.

All very, very good suggestions - thanks, everybody! Now to dig deeper into their catalogs, especially that Reignwolf dude. Very creative approach and a hell of a voice.
