Is it a cultural thing that pies in the US usually have fruit fillings rather than meat and gray?

Is it a cultural thing that pies in the US usually have fruit fillings rather than meat and gray? Chicken pot pie is quite popular here. A fair number of us also eat shepherd's pie, spanakopita, and quiche on occasion, if they count. Aside from that, though, I think when most people think of pie, they think of the dessert kind. There are lots of popular non-fruit dessert pies, though, like egg custard pies, chocolate pies, boston creme pies, pecan pies, etc. (In case you can't tell, I was just at a diner last night drooling over the pie case. I ended up getting red velvet cake, tho.) Bottom line: we're not especially picky here in America. Put it in front of us, and we'll probably eat it. ETA: That said, the distribution in the pie chart is probably about right. I'd be surprised if less than 60% of Americans had eaten apple pie at least once in their lives, but it's much more likely for someone not to have tried key lime or a savory pie.
