2001: A Space Odyssey[/i] Directed by Stanley Kubrick. Written by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. Adapted from Arthur C. Clarke’s novel of the same name. Starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester and the voice of Douglas Rain. Released on April 2, 1968. I am not going to write too much about the movie right now. There are a lot of things to discuss about 2001 and I don’t want to jam them all into the first post in the discussion. I’ve seen 2001 seven times and after each viewing I like it more each time. My "Three Reasons" why this film is particularly unique: 1: The untraditional means through which the story unfolds. 2: The groundbreaking special effects. 3: The innovative use of classical music taken from existing commercial recordings. Watch and discuss the movie that defined space travel and has been called one of the best and most influential movies ever made. Also, remember to add your selection to the schedule. docs.google.com/folder/d/0B9hPR8HPrcOLa3RNTzhWdWtIbkE/edit?pli=1

2001 is a movie that I have turned around on. I wasn't a big fan at all the first time I saw it, but it requires multiple viewings to take everything in.
Having said that, I can completely understand why some people don't like it.

A film about technology and human innovation that uses classical musical to punctuate it's imagery. Music is, after all, another human invention, a form of technology in it's own way.

To me, it's a movie worth seeing at least once so that one had at least seen it. That said, I like the movie - love it in fact - but it's about as far from "popcorn movie" as it gets, which is to say that I only watch it once every couple of years. It is slow paced and has sequences that boggle the mind. It's a hard pill to swallow. Like said before, I also can understand why people might dislike it.
I am a firm believer that works should stand alone, but the film and the novel were made simultaneously and they truly complement each other. The novel explains things better through prose, but the film is a visual and audial feast of a presentation. Many films are based on novels while many films have novelizations, but the pairing of 2001's film and novel truly seems unique in that their relationship is neither. I recommend everyone who likes the film to read the novel and then watch the film again.

I actually prefer Andrei Tarkovsky's version of "Solaris" but I think the movies compliment each other well.

Most overrated piece of crap I ever saw. care to elaborate? Not trying to call you out. You can feel however you do and express such, just comments of this nature are what we're trying to avoid, for multiple reasons. Firstly, it really add much to this convo, imo. We're trying to go a little deeper than "I liked it" or "I hated it." That adds nothing. Saying why creates points of discussion, potentially. Secondly, at least for me personally, I try and avoid terms like overrated, as its somewhat confrontational in nature. I personally love 2001, and by calling it an overrated piece of crap, what are you saying about my film tastes? Again, like or hate a film all that you want. Just try and make your comments substantive and related to the movie, not its fans

2001 is one of those movies you need to watch a few times to get it. It's like Big Lebowski in that way.

All I have to say is "Board Meetings...............IN SPACE!!!!!!"

2001 is definitely a must have for those who have a blu-ray player. The shots of space and the colorful journey at the end are amazing!

How do you add a movie to the scedule? Plus, I have no way to access this movie, as much as I really want to see it...is it easy to find on youtube? The link to the Google Docs is in my sig. Add your name(and film) to the schedule. And although it's not the case here, as the Kubrick Estate and Google have come to an agreement, I generally frown upon asking for things like YT links to films(unless they're similar to 2001, where it is a legal link), for no other reason then it potentially violates Proboards' ToS. If that is how you want to view your films, I can't stop you, but I think it's best to avoid the subject of free links to videos(again, not the case here, and I'm not trying to single you out or anything. Kind of like with Seth's first comment, it just provided a good time, place, and manner to clarify some of our guidelines)

Amazing film.
However, wasn't the final soundtrack an accident, rather than design? If I remember correctly, Kubrick actually commissioned a guy to write the score for the whole film and it never got used?
If so, it's arguably the greatest change made to a film in pre-production!

Yup. Alex North(I believe) scored the film originally. Story goes that Kubrick liked to listen to classical music as he edited, and soon realized that he was unintentionally editing 2001 to the classical music he was listening to, and decided that it was a much better fit. And yeah, this is easily one of the better decisions ever made in the history of cinema IMO(not that North's score is bad, it's just one of those things were the music has become so synonymous with 2001 that I can't imagine anything else working).

One of my favourite films. I find it very easy to watch and have done several times. To me, Kubrick absolutely nailed what science fiction should be about, not being afraid to chuck in some philosophy there and asking questions of the audience. And waaaaay ahead of the curve on themes around artificial intelligence and ancient astronaut theories.
Agree that reading the book makes the film more understandable. Not to turn this into a book discussion or anything but the sequels are worth checking out even if they are a mixed bag. 3001 is particularly interesting and totally unfilmable.
