Zodiac (2007)Directed by David Fincher Written by James Vanderbilt, based on books by Robert Graysmith Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox, Chloe Sevigny, Charles Fleischer, Elias Koteas, Donal Logue, John Carroll Lynch I've always found the Zodiac case fascinating. I'm assuming that the Zodiac crimes are pretty well known so I'm not going to get into that, but I will say those expecting a run-of-the-mill serial killer flick might be disappointed. What we get here is a story concentrating on the investigation into the identity of the infamous killer. And considering Fincher brought us "Seven" (Sorry, I just can't bring myself to type it the other way, with the number 7 in the middle.) I would say that a story like this is in very capable hands. What we end up with is a very well argued thesis on the killer's identity, with the killings (which are very intense) taking place early with the bulk of it concentrating on the investigations of the San Francisco PD, and the media, particularly cartoonist Robert Graysmith (played here by Gyllenhaal), while also focusing on Graysmith's near obsession with the case. The best performance in the film is from Downey, who was robbed of a Best Supporting Actor Nomination, in my opinion, as drunken, chain-smoking S.F. Chronicle crime reporter Paul Avery. Here's the trailer:

I adore Zodiac and always find more to love every time I watch it. It's my favorite movie of its decade.

I definitely think it's a crime that it was completely snubbed at the Oscars and has been largely forgotten. In a perfect world it would have been up for the following:
Best Picture Best Supporting Actor (Downey) Best Director Best Adapted Screenplay Best Art Direction Best Visual Effects

I just finished this. I found Zodiac to be fascinating and enthralling from start to finish. Strong performances by all the cast members.

Love this movie.
It's probably my favorite Fincher film. That says a lot considering i'm huge fan of almost all of his work. It's a shame it didnt get any oscar love considering the field that year was fairly weak.

Certainly should have at least been nominated over Atonement and Juno, but I definitely think it's one of the stronger films of a pretty strong year (There Will be Blood, Assassination of Jesse James, No Country for Old Men, Michael Clayton, Ratatouille, Persepolis...). I'm pretty sure I watched it every night at 2 AM for about a month earlier this year on IFC, and it surprises me how insanely rewatchable it is.

Criminally underrated when compared to Fincher's other work. Shame the Blu-Ray is out-of-print too, good luck finding one for under $100.

There's a British version of the director's cut that appears to be region-free for ~$22 on Amazon right now

You used to be able to find it at Blockbuster but they've (almost?) all shut down. I picked it up last February just because I loved it, had no idea it was OOP until I got home. About the only time that's ever happened.

This is annoying, because the true story is annoying.
Because I didn't know the true story, I went into this film blind. I loved the intrigue at the start, how they had him on the phone - the tense scenes towards the end. Jake Gyllenhaal getting closer to the end and then...
It just ends, with a closing caption that says. 'THE MURDERER WAS NEVER CONVICTED. BUT THAT DUDE WORKING IN THE HARDWARE STORE TOTALLY DID IT, BY THE WAY.'
I know that in real life they never caught anyone, but I can't properly enjoy the film knowing it doesn't really end. It builds and builds and builds and then just peters out completely, especially Robert Downey Jnr. disappearing completely halfway through.
Again this is what actually happened but it makes it an unsatisfying film for me.

Like gizzarkhenry I didn't know anything about the real life events upon which the movie was based. prior to watching it. The fact the they killer was never officially caught made it more fascinating to me.

Brilliant film that should really be more popular. Don't think I've seen a Fincher film I didn't like yet.
