Anyone hear of it other than WWE's recent appearance there? I never really knew much about it, but I just did an interview with Ivan Markov, who is a former IWF Heavyweight Champion (Russia's top promotion) who told me all about it and sent me some helpful info. It looks like a pretty nifty scene from what I've seen of it and Shane McMahon even appeared there once. Also, Markov had a SWEET match with El Generico. For those interested: Here is the IWF's YouTube channel: bit.ly/WFLusAThe aforementioned interview (the El Generico match is at the bottom): bit.ly/TF6yz8

Joe E. Legend did work in Russia a couple of times. So did Eckie Eckstein, Raven, Sonjay Dutt and Matt Cross.

Don't remember exactly, but somewhere around 2006-8 I think, him and Joe had a match at IWF show.

I was actually wondering, was pro wrestling a big thing back in the days of the Soviet Union? If so, did they have the evil Americans as heels the way we had evil Russians?

From what I've read/heard it wasn't big in terms of having actual Russian promotions. I think some Japanese promotions were shown on TV from time to time there though.

NJPW did a few shows that failed horribly in Russia after the Soviet Union broke up.
I see IWF stuff pop up on torrents but I've never actually watched it.

NJPW did a few shows that failed horribly in Russia after the Soviet Union broke up. I see IWF stuff pop up on torrents but I've never actually watched it. There was a New Japan card on December 31st 1989 in Moscow that Strong Style Spirit claims drew 15,000 people at what was then Lenin Stadium, which has a capacity of about 78,000. The matches all seemed to be quite short and a good number involved Russian wrestlers, many of whom don't seem to have much information about them on the internet. The card can be found here.
