For being 100 years old it still kind of holds up. It has a touching end that fills the heart as all good Christmas movies should. But some strange things that were normal back then and not now.
Apparently Santa also brought the Christmas Turkey. Now, I understand whats going on in the film and the context as to what the father said.. But I am glad Santa no longer brings the turkey. I mean come on. On top of traveling all around the world with hand made toys he also used to bring raw poultry? I mean the toys are dirty, and flying around 1912 North America and Europe was not flying in clean air by the least bit. Couple that with how the sleigh is small so the bird would be all crushed together by the time it got to someone's house. I mean think of waking up Christmas Morning and seeing a few toys and a dirty bloody carcass of a turkey sitting under the tree. That sounds so wonderful.
"Hey Sally, look Santa left you a bloody hunk of something. Looks like someone was good this year. And look he also left Billy some coal because he is naughty. Why don't you two go play with your presents"
And yes, things were different back then. That was a different age. But come on. If 100 years ago Santa brought Raw poultry what did he bring 200 years ago? Dead animals, toys, coal and some snuff? Did that also fall off over the years some snuff for the kiddies?
The more I think about, I want 1912 Santa back. At least he was practical. Now all that fat man does is deliver Chinese made toys and electronics...and maybe a Coke. If he were to at least return to his butchering days he would seem more bad ass and independent. All he is now is a shill for mega corporations. Throwing a raw bird under the three shows something more. It shows that you actually care about the person.
So if you are looking for a gift this year. Think what would 1912 Santa get.
