When they give these guys Gut Checks that don't have obvious storylines going in (so not Joey Ryan and Wes Brisco), do they actually sign them based on the quality of their Gut Check match or have they decided before the Gut Check? Obviously, they can decide to wing it if the match was exceptionally bad (Kris Lewie) but what is their standard practice with these deals?

I'm pretty sure they decide before the match. I know they evaluate them before giving them the TV nod.

Unless, you're Ric Flair. In that case, you say the heck with the script and do whatever the hell you feel like.

If you're green as hell but have a good sob story, you're in.
Otherwise, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Let's see... how does Gut Check work? Well... first, the Gut Check segment starts. Then I change the channel. Then um... well, I really can't tell you much more than that.

The Gut Check is a shoot. TBA does also do off camera gut checks which is how they signed a few guys like Crimson.

You hope to god you aren't Kris Lewie. The audience hopes that as well.

I think the idea in theory is good but the judgement segments are poor. When they started out, it was shortly after TNA had worked out a deal with OVW to become their new developmental territory. TNA had sent Jesse down there at the end of 2011 after signing him and had Rob Terry and Crimson go down there as well.
I think TNA (outside of a few exceptions like Joey Ryan, Christian York, and Wes Brisco) are/were looking for wrestlers they could develop. I mean, they have screening processes at their House Shows (Sugar Dunkerton was going to one over the summer). And the first three winners make sense.
Silva and Hendrix had been working for OVW, and I think Danny Davis recommended them.
Sam Shaw had a few dark matches with TNA and 2010 and actually helped Raven at Hardcore Justice so they had interest in him.
With Kris Lewrie, he's a student from Team 3d's school so it was probably a favor to them he got a look. He just came in in horrible shape and looked awful in the ring.
That Markopoulos kid is only 17 and from New England so I could see moving to Kentucky at this point in time being an issue.
Now again, this is just a theory of mine, but just looking at OVW's staff and reading what TNA wants to do. I think it's a new way of giving tryouts to wrestlers
