The THQ/AKI design in general worked because it felt so loose and free. You can run off the apron and hit guys with attacks. You could do that in WCW/nWo World Tour in 1997. I can't even do that with Smackdown series in 2012. That's telling. ...Yes you can. It's been in for years, I'm pretty sure dating back to at least the Smackdown Vs. Raw era of names. Also, personally I've never considered it the best Wrestling game ever. It was alright, and I liked it... but there are just some flaws in the game that ruin it for me, like Super Heavyweights being completely useless, managers that really serve no purpose, the game models were always graphically dated, and of course the most major of all to me the save data glitch. Oh how could I have forgotten the save data glitch!!!? I almost had a stroke when that happened to me. It actually happened to me twice, but by the second time I had a Game Shark so I could instantly get back all of the store items and I had backed up my CAWs on a memory card, but yeah I can see how that hurts the game a bit.

Never really liked it. My favourite was Smackdown: Shut You Mouth. Awesome gameplay, amazing season mode.
Much like HCTP, I thought No Mercy was ridiculously overrated, but that's just my opinion.

Wasn't No Mercy the game where you could totally alter any Superstar's attire to whatever you wanted? Or was it just the color?
I remember my CAW was "Jason X". Giant man with Test's pants, Christian's mesh shirt, dreads, bandana and sunglasses.

You can make them into a whole different person if you want. That was great for stables. You want Steve Austin in the Right to Censor or Undertaker as a member of Too Cool. Boom! 3 minutes later you're off and running. I used to love to make my own Jericho and Kurt Angle attires.

I tried to love No Mercy. I got into quite a few old N64 games a while back, I wasn't that fussy about graphics, but... I found it barely playable. Maybe I was spoiled with the quality of the Smackdown series, but it just felt slow, clunky, and overly complex for the simplest things. I'd rank it ahead of the Warzone/Attitude/ECW set and WCW Thunder, but other than those, I'd say it's the worst 3D wrestling game I've ever played.
My personal highlights are Smackdown 2, Shut Your Mouth, SVR'10 and WWE 12/13.

I think I'm the only guys who really enjoys Smackdown vs Raw 2008. It gets a lot of cracks, due to how butchered it was as a result of the hasty recall to remove all references to Benoit, leaving with a broken, dull season mode, and glitchy as all hell, but I really dig the GM mode, the roster at hand, and the engine is pretty fun. I know, GM mode has stocks of filler and gibberish, but it's the only wrestling game I've played and keep playing over the last 4 years.

I still find No Mercy the most accessible wrestling game. If I have a non-wrestling friend present and want to play a wrestling game on multiplayer I put on No Mercy. Although recently All Stars has taken a similar position as it's very arcade like and easy to grasp. AKI series is legendary though. (ahem, see sig )

I have No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000, WCW Revenge, and WWE 12. I play WWE 12 weekly, never touch the others. The new games really are better. No Mercy was awesome for it's time, and the branching storyline mode needs to be adopted in the newer games ASAP, but the gameplay in 12 is better.

You can make them into a whole different person if you want. I remember hearing a WWF/E higher up was pissed that someone could put Triple H in a dress if they so desired. Perhaps that's why you can only edit colors in later games?

5 Years ago i would have said yes, these days not so much. Still an excellent game though. Cons - Managers didn't do anthing You could play as a manager if you knew the trick to play one.

No Mercy hasn't aged well, IMHO. Revenge and WM2000 both play a little smoother I think.
Virtual Pro Wrestling 2, the Japanese version of No Mercy essentially, is the best out of that series of games (VPW, World Tour, Revenge, WM2000, No Mercy, VPW 2)
It had a MMA mode with mount positions, and a create-a-mask.

Nope. It's Day of Reckoning 2 for Gamecube. This is still my wrestling game of choice. I'm thinking of attempting CM Punk and Daniel Bryan CAWs soon. Me and a mate made a pretty bad-ass bearded CM Punk, and the moveset means our D-Bry is just lethal due to how fast he is with his kicks. DOR2 wins hands down. No Mercy can't compete with it's gameplay at all. Not even the great WWE12/13 can compete with it.

And running grapples, no slow down during four man, an outdoor stadium and it the gameplay suits Japanese strong style way better than WCW/NWO Revenge. Every SvR since 08 I say replaces No Mercy but I haven't played them for as long as No Mercy. If I'm going to revisit a past wrestling games it's going to be one of the AKI ones. I think WWE 13 finally beats it for sure though. I've had it since it came out and my only complaints are minor nitpicks, like some of glitches and the AI still isn't perfect.
