I really wonder this. The game came out 12 years ago and I am not sure if it's still considered the greatest wrestling game ever.
Don't get me wrong, it was a great game, but it wasn't without problems either. Some wrestling game fans compared it to other games that came out. Some even credited Smackdown HCTP to be right up there with No Mercy nearly a decade ago.
I know AKI/Syn Sophia doesn't make wrestling games anymore. The Def Jam games (There were only two and Takeover; Icon never happened) were great games. I have never played the Ultimate Muscle games, but I have read that they were good.
No Mercy still holds up in gameplay, but there have been other games that are good in their own way. Like HCTP, SYM (Shut Your Mouth), SvR 2006, etc.
No Mercy is still a good game, but I think some people gave it a little too much credit.

WCW vs NWO revenge was a better wrestling game but No Mercy had a better story but then Wrestlemania 2000 had a better story mode than No Mercy.
Strictly WWE then Wrestlemania 2000 was the best one in my opinion.
W2000 WCW/NWO NO Mercy.

5 Years ago i would have said yes, these days not so much. Still an excellent game though.
Pros: - Tons of Moves - Large Roster - Special Guest Referee Matches - Gameplay was fun - Branching storylines - Modability on PC
Cons - Slowdown when 4 wrestlers in the ring - CAW superceded by todays games - Managers didn't do anthing - Drag out of rumble to be elminated by last guys out. - Counter happy AI infuriates people. - Short and Poor Entrances

I'd say given its possibilities in modding and editing via gameshark and simple ROM hacking, No Mercy has retained its popularity thanks to both quality and versatility.
The THQ/AKI design in general worked because it felt so loose and free. You can run off the apron and hit guys with attacks. You could do that in WCW/nWo World Tour in 1997. I can't even do that with Smackdown series in 2012. That's telling.

I think it's still the best game in terms of gameplay, but not so much in terms of CAW, story mode, and match types.

Probably minority opinion, but I never got into No Mercy. Maybe it's because I played it after I got into the Smackdown series, but it just didn't feel as fun for me compared to the Smackdown games.

I STILL wish it had a larger roster, but at least the DLC is cheap enough and will make up for it. I just love going 30-40 minutes, constant counters, tons of near-falls. Best online play, too.

I still consider my personal favorite in regards to wrestling games and still play it on N64 constantly, no joke I have 10 memory cards full of CAWs. I agree with BorneAgain with the gameplay being so loose, and I think it's still the best game if you're a fan of high-flying spots. Although I understand why many consider the CAW to be dated, I prefer it over the current crop just because of how simplistic it is, meaning I don't have to use morphing tools on a character's face to get them to look like someone. Sure I have to use my imagination on some, but it's never been a stretch.
I've been meaning to ask someone on this board if they've done any ROM work with this game and what's the easiest/best place to look for info about getting into it. I've been able to download it to my PC, but can't figure out how to create the hacks I've seen; ie new moves, arenas, etc. Any info would be appreciated!

Nope. It's Day of Reckoning 2 for Gamecube.

Nope. It's Day of Reckoning 2 for Gamecube. I still remember how FAR better both Day of Reckonings were to the SvR series. Shame how THQ never continued that for Nintendo consoles rather than just porting SvR over to it.

In m opinion it is the best.. I have the fondest memories of that game and would buy a N64 again just for that one game.. I loved it.
I am no longer a gamer so my opinion doesn't count. I did play a lot of smack downs and still found no mercy amazing

I think WCW/NWO Revenge was better. Sure there was no CAW mode and things like that but there was also no slowing down and getting choppy when there are four guys in the ring. There were also so many legendary guys that made it into the game that it's practically a Legends of Wrestling game in it's own right (but with good controls).

Nope. It's Day of Reckoning 2 for Gamecube. This is still my wrestling game of choice. I'm thinking of attempting CM Punk and Daniel Bryan CAWs soon.

Nope. It's Day of Reckoning 2 for Gamecube. This. But as far as the AKI games, I've always preferred Wrestlemania 2000. Then WCW/NWO Revenge, and then No Mercy.

There were also so many legendary guys that made it into the game that it's practically a Legends of Wrestling game in it's own right (but with good controls). The problem with the game is finishers didn't seem to have enough power in that game like they did in WM 2000 and No Mercy. I remember having to Jackhammer guys like Lodi or Sick Boy like 4 times to beat them on occasion. Still a great game though. I would say No Mercy is the best, but you could make a case for any of the N64 AKI games really (even World Tour). You could do so many things with it. The way you could modify the Royal Rumble into a bunch of other match types was also really fun. And I know CAWs don't look exactly like their real life counterparts in No Mercy, but I can make one that looks as good as the other characters in the game in like 10 minutes. If I want to do that on a Smackdown game, I would have to take the day off of work. I've enjoyed many of the Smackdown games, but the AKI games are just so fun. My brother doesn't even like wrestling anymore, but whenever we go back home for the holidays, we have to play some N64 AKI wrestling games.

That's true, I forgot about how invincible everybody was in WCW/NWO Revenge. I've never owned a copy of No Mercy but I borrowed a copy from a friend and played it for a few weeks and then when I switched back to Revenge I was like "damn, what does it take to beat somebody in this game!" lol, so yeah I know what you mean.

I just remembered once playing as Scott Hall and wrestling against Yugi Nagata on hard mode and doing the Outsider's Edge on him. Nagata got up like it was nothing.

Having played it religiously recently when a buddy of mine came to visit cause he loves it. I can tell you any of the current games have more playability for me. No Mercy was excellent for it's time, but it had been surpassed.

Also, personally I've never considered it the best Wrestling game ever. It was alright, and I liked it... but there are just some flaws in the game that ruin it for me, like Super Heavyweights being completely useless, managers that really serve no purpose, the game models were always graphically dated, and of course the most major of all to me the save data glitch.
