Think it's sales.
The top three was pretty easy to work out, but it baffles me how a two year old Ellie Goulding track did so well in America. Really good song, but pretty leftfield how it broke out.

Wow... I am clueless when it comes to mainstream music. Going through the list, it took until #47 to find a song that I've actually heard of.

How is this determined again? Sales, airplay, and streaming.

Same man, was playing name all the songs on Sporcle yesterday and I was like "Ellie Goulding at 5?!? Is she big in America? I don't even know this song!" So yeah is Ellie Goulding big in America then? She's not that huge overhere.

4) "Gangnam Style" - Psy: It's not just a song, it's a phenomenon. It launched k-pop into the American mainstream There's more than one Korean pop star?

Her 2 biggest songs right now are Lights and Anything Can Happen
I honestly think Lights just got popular because of the dubstep remix. Still I love the song.

So happy that "Lights" is #5. A great song by a great singer.

Glad to see which song is #1. Not into mainstream music, but that really was the best new song I heard all year. That and Hold On by Alabama Shakes.

1) "The A-Team" - Ed Sheeran: I'm absolutely stunned that this song completely missed the top 100 Billboard list but I'm guessing that had to do more with subject matter limiting radio play than the actual song. Simple and folksy with incredibly well-written lyrics means the Sheeran is going to be around the music forefront and critical acclaim for as long as he continues writing beautiful lyrics. This was the best song of the year in my opinion. That song is played a lot in the UK; but yeah I know what you mean. Sheeran will be the biggest thing going within a few years, he's absolutely incredible. Phenominally talented; like ridiculously so.

4) "Gangnam Style" - Psy: It's not just a song, it's a phenomenon. It launched k-pop into the American mainstream There's more than one Korean pop star? There are many of them, but they can't break into the American mainstream market, and that makes the original statement inaccurate. PSY did/has not launch K-Pop into the American mainstream. He just found success with one novelty hit. We haven't suddenly seen a whole bunch of K-Pop acts capture America's attention. Not only that, PSY is completely different from pretty much every other K-Pop act, and I'm pretty sure the typical K-Pop will never hit mainstream popularity quite like Gangnam Style has.

I've heard absolutely none of these except the Flo Rida songs, and even those are only because of WWE having him perform them at WM.

In a slightly unrelated note, the Billboard Classic channel that put this video together is one of the greatest thing on the internet if you're into pop music and it's history. I could watch his videos for days straight if I could.
