I had this idea while I was driving to work this morning and in my head it sounds awesome, so I figured I'd run it by the rest of you guys.
Cena has obviously become very stale with older people, generally men, but with kids he's still the man and they still love seeing him. So my idea is to have Cena turn hell ONLY on the older men in the audience. It would be sort of a Bret Hart style heel turn where he's a heel with one section of the audience and a hero with the other. It could be designed to make him a huge heel with guys like 16 and older who have already turned against Cena but stay a superhero face with the younger kids who still love him.
I think I'd play it off by having Cena give a promo about how he hasn't changed, it's the fans that have changed. He could talk about how all the guys in the audience that like to boo him now have all turned their backs on him and he's always been the same guy. Enough time has passed where a lot of the people booing him are the same people that used to cheer him when they were younger. It would be very Bret Hart-ish only he'd be telling the older fans to stick it instead of Americans. As older guy fans we could then cheer harder for guys like Ziggler and boo Cena and it would all fit into the angle that they were running.
I would also have him put the poop and bathroom humor jokes into complete overdrive. The jokes that only kids below the age of like 12 find funny and will absolutely drive older people crazy. He's so good that he could play to the kids in the audience in a sincere way but in such an over the top way that it makes the older people want to puke.
I've given up hope that we'll ever get a full blown Cena heel turn but maybe this twist would at least freshen up his character. It would at least let the WWE have a character that isn't so stale he's being booed for the wrong reasons and would present interesting matches with Punk, Ziggler, and every other guy that only the adult males seem to cheer for.

You're never going to see a straight heel turn from Cena any time soon. And the reason for that can be found in the post-WrestleMania 28 episode of Raw. When Cena stood up there and teased that maybe the time has come and he'll finally lash out at the auidence, the idiots in the crowd started going "YES! YES! YES!" and ruined things. Any Cena turn - even one that's done in the way you're suggesting - will just be giving the haters of Cena what they want (which is a "fresher" Cena). And no heel should be in the business of giving anybody what they want to see.
Cena as he is pisses the anti-Cena demographic off already. And part of that is because he just won't stop being so positive about those who hate him.

Him having more attitude about it would make him a face to us. Will kids hate him for that? I don't know. But the why the original post was suggested how do you book anybody against him. Dolph would be a face for us but a heel to the kids? Which would mean everyone would basically have to be a tweener against him. Which I don't see how that can work. The thing is. Cena NEEDS to go Heel. To say he never will is a BS statement. He stale and bland as hell. To say he can't go heel or will never. Ok Hogan was once the man to all. More so to kids. If he can go heel and be the king of heels. So can Cena. You can say the kids may not like it but guess what. There will always be kids. How many kids you think loved the attitude era change? It happened because business overall was not doing so great. If they see $$$ is something they will do it. They know a heel Cena or at less Cena with more attitude would be $$$. What if Cena became more like Austin? He doesn't have to "Turn heel" but started acting more Badass.

He's already the heel for some people. This. He's the biggest heel of all to a lot of people. Sometimes it feels like WWE does it on purpose just so we support the heels and buy their merch.

As Seth Mates said this week - the biggest face in WWE is John Cena. The biggest heel in WWE... is also John Cena.

I had this interesting idea on how to turn Cena heel. But the last thing the WWE needs is for anyone to use yours or my ideas for their own benefit. I've read a lot of great, imaginative, and exciting ideas from a lot of you guys here, and let me say some of you should be bookers/writers for the show.
I honestly think the PERFECT time to turn Cena heel was when the backlash first started with Edge, RVD, and even Angle. The second time was when he was forced to join Nexus.

What Chikara are doing with Soldier Ant is what WWE should have done with Cena in the Nexus. Have him very resistant at the start, but gradually over time, he starts getting more evil. It won't be immediate, but eventually it'll come to the point where he's just like Barrett.

I've come to realise WWE are never going to turn him, but all I want is for John's character to get some of his attitude back since it's the reason adults started cheering him leading to a face turn in the first place. I see the attitude a bit when he goes super serious and heartfelt in his promos and I just wish he would be like that more than he is.

he's already the biggest heel in the company IMO. he wins every feud and everybody gets booked to look like an underdog against him. it's stupid booking. at least with Hogan he'd make someone like Earthquake look like a total beast before he went over him.

Massive heel. That s***-eating grin, generic promos, cock-blocking Ryder, costing Ziggler his cash-in, a general indifference to most things. His character hasn't evolved in years. Luckily, Cena has the talent to get around a flaw that would have buried a lot of other guys to 'future endeavoured'. I agree with the idea that he's Bret Hart by being a heel in some parts but overwhelmingly a face in others. The only time he's interesting or shows any depth was feuding with Punk.

Cena DOESN'T need to turn heel. Imo, the problem with John Cena isn't his stale character or whatever. The problem is that he's treated as the Be All End All of the WWE. When the AJ/Ziggler/Cena angle began, Cena was slowly dialed back while they focused on Ryback and The Shield. I thing a face Cena could be slowly taken out of the spotlight, and moved into the role that Shawn Michaels had in his second run: a high profile star who is always treated like a big deal, but isn't all over the show. If Cena turns heel, then the show will become focused on whatever Cena did to turn heel, and/or his explanations. He'll be back to being the center of the universe all over again.

He's already a heel, as has been said. It's the smartest WWE has done in years, really. They make money off of his fans AND his haters.

Cena's smart enough to play it off correctly, and actively piss off his haters with the "You guys don't bother me, I love you all" attitude, too. The "Work on my heel persona" comment was gold, when it comes to pissing off the sort of people who see red at his very existence.

At this point, turning him heel would be WWE/Cena caving in and giving the anti-Cena people what they want. Cena and WWE are doing an amazing job of trolling the anti-Cena audience by keeping him face. WWE obviously acknowledges it, evident with Cena's "work on my heel persona" comment. It's almost beautiful how hard WWE is trolling those guys without even trying, it's honestly a work of art.

So to those who say WWE will never turn Cena heel. What's going to happen when those say soccer moms, kids, etc start getting bored of him? It's bound to happen. The mindsets and tastes change over time.

...except to suddenly pull a Big Dave in his very last appearance and go out a whining, screaming lunatic.

Kids, in my eyes, their attention span tends to change a lot obviously and usually when something new, cool, and exciting perhaps even edgier arrives they gravitate towards that. In an age where the anti-hero(someone like Punk) is still cheered and respected, it's only a matter of time before those same kids start to rebel against him. It happened with Hogan and it's slowly going to start happening with Cena.

Cena's been a main eventer for 7 years. If the kids haven't already turned on him it's not gonna happen I don't think. Even a kid that was as young as 5 when he first won the WWE title is almost a teenager now.
