Cena is pretty much set for life, so his credibility isn't particularly in question, anyway. Punk, on the other hand, wouldn't mind the boost.

Punk beating The Rock when Cena couldn't doesn't hurt Cena's credibility at all if Punk does it via dirty tactics which he almost certainly would. Then you get to have Punk gloating about doing what Cena never could, which is standard heel practice. Punk could drag that to WrestleMania where he finally got his comeuppance from someone. Cheating to beat the Rock doesn't help Punk one bit and is a waste of having Rock get beat, if you get a name to lose to your guys it needs to be clean and in the middle to get the maximum value out of it. If Punk was to brag about it he would need to lose to Cena and that is a match they should never do as the ME of WM unless they are out of options since its always there to have.

You can't keep having you top baby face come up short time and time again like Cena has for almost a year now outside of the Brock match which he should have got beat in.

Yeah, if Rock hadn't announced that he was challenging for the WWE championship at the Royal Rumble, there would have been no reason for Punk to turn heel.

This theory is flawed. Punk could have easily lost the title since Raw 1000 and won it back in time for the Rumble. Hell, somebody else could've faced The Rock at the Rumble, with Punk (after being taunted about not still being the WWE Champ) winning the Rumble and facing Rock at Mania.

Thirteen years on, Chris Jericho still trades on the fact that he beat the Rock and Steve Austin, in the same night. Neither of them were remotely clean.

Though on the flip side, they still try and hype up Daniel Bryan beating Big Show in 45 seconds for the Heavyweight Title, like it's some sort of amazing accomplishment.
