Character development isnt consistent or consistently strong enough. The biggets issue for me is the way the show is so obviously scripted. Everything feels like it just fits into a little slot on the timesheet.
I think its not that they're too basic or too complex, it's that they're too aimless and disjointed lacking a clear direction. Like, one week AJ is crazy and being a slut, then she's a scrappy pulled her self up by her bootstraps angel with a dirty face, then she's a slut again. Things don't connect the way they should in narratives and the way they have in better times in wrestling. Any one of these ideas would be a basic storyline, but they're constantly jumping from one thing to another. Through the effort of connecting all these disparate ideas and threads into one story you end up with a very complex storyline that is rife with inconsistencies and contraditions and difficult to invest in.
I don't get how any AJ storyline has been "basic". If anything it seems random, and not well thought out.
If you are making the point that the Kofi/Miz and Kofi/Barrett storylines were simple, I can see how you think that, but to me they don't even feel like storylines, they just do the SAME match every week.
