Anyone remember when this showed during the 1990s on MTV when MTV didn't have so many reality shows? Let us take the time to appreciate this show.

I'd put the Jay-Z/Roots show from their early 2000's "revival" up against any of the classic episodes.

Nirvana. So much has been said and written about their performance. Its beautiful, sad, and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Pearl Jam and the Alice in Chains unplugged performances were very beautiful, haunting, and emotional as well. I think it should be brought back with bands like Coheed and Cambria, Alter Bridge, and Mark Tremonti's solo band,

Modern day unplugged still exists.
Nirvana's unplugged album is their best record.

Modern day unplugged still exists. Nirvana's unplugged album is their best record. Unplugged occasionally airs on VH1. Florence + The Machine did one a few months ago. There are so many great ones that it would be impossible to list them all. I'll give an honorable mention to the Oasis show, which Liam decided to skip out of:

Oasis MTV Unplugged was awesome! more so after the show when Liam got pissed off because Kurt Loder after the show said "ladies and gentlemen Oasis the way it should be!" but thats what Liam gets for saying he couldnt sing only to hang out in the balcony heckle Noel all night and ask people around him how they are enjoying watching his brother die on stage.. also have too mention KISS Mtv Unplugged, such an amazing performance

That shit with Jay-Z was crazy. I think having a live band really helped people who normally wouldn't acknowledge it, the kind of talent that goes into producing hiphop.

Nirvana's Unplugged was my favorite, with Alice In Chains as a close second.

Unplugged still exists, it's just not promoted as much. I know Korn, Foster the People, 30 Seconds to Mars, Lil Wayne and several others have done it. It's not mentioned as much, and usually gets AirPlay thorough MTV hits or MTV.com.

That s*** with Jay-Z was crazy. I think having a live band really helped people who normally wouldn't acknowledge it, the kind of talent that goes into producing hiphop. LL Cool J sounded awesome with a band behind him on his Unplugged show too. I'm glad big hip hop acts have smartened up and understand just how awesome a live band sounds for concerts compared to some awful snare/bass drum loop breaking up through the PA. Jay-Z's performance on VH1 Storytellers was RIDICULOUS for that very reason.

Hated it with a passion. Appearing on MTV Unplugged meant your band sold out. Every grunge band that played this gig went downhill shortly afterwards. Take Nirvana for instance, sure it was their most popular album but Kurt Cobain hated fame and ended up killing himself a few years later.

Take Nirvana for instance, sure it was their most popular album but Kurt Cobain hated fame and ended up killing himself a few years later. Actually, the show was taped about 6 months before his suicide and the album was released after his death. And I'd imagine his chronic health problems and drug abuse had much more to do with his death than being famous. It's far easier to stop being famous than stop the other two. And any band that appeared on the show had "sold out" long before they appeared on Unplugged. Signing to a label is the moment when you lose complete control over your music, which every band would have done long before appearing on this show. If you're into the whole "sold out" thing anyway...
