See, I always thought Kidman performed the SSP that way deliberately, to make it look more like an offensive, impactful move rather than just a "pretty" one. I took it as him using the rotation to get twice the velocity of a normal splash, making his entire bodyweight even more powerful.
When he came to the WWE, I thought he cranked the "make it look blunt and painful" up even harder, considering 2002 was the time they were cutting down on the more "Cartoon-y" moves like Hurricane's chokeslam in order to make matches more "believable." Kidman made his SSP seem like something brutal a person would logically do in fight, rather than a spectacle for sports entertainment.
It's not my favorite SSP, but I believed there was a method to his madness.

Kidman also confronted Brock Lesnar about the SSP saying "I can do the F5, but you don't see me doing that for big matches" See, I don't believe this story at all, for the simple reason that Kidman isn't either dead or permanently in a wheelchair. Maybe he didn't say it to Brock's face, but the interview was on WWE.com.

After London started doing the move, it ruined it for me. He did so beautifully and applied so many variations that anyone who did it before or afterwards just didn't compare to me.

Kidman went from being built like a gymnast in WCW to being built like every other wrestler in the WWE... That might explain why he became as underwhelming as he became toward the end. He lost his look, he lost his flexibility and he became unmotivated and sloppy. This was what I was going to say. Kidman gained a lot of muscle mass for WWE and lost a lot of his agility due to it. I agree his SSP fails in comparison to others but it wasn't as bad as a lot of people said it was.

It always looked to me like other guys would leap into it first then rotate, whereas Kidman looked like he just wanted to rotate as quickly as possible without getting much spring/height first.

If it looks too pretty, it looks fake.

If it looks too pretty, it looks fake. I dunno about that. A Corkscrew 450 done properly looks devastating and beautiful, to me.

For a move that can be so pretty and graceful his had the grace of a moo cow. "...and he had the build of a moo cow." Sorry, just thinking on how Road Dogg or Josh would respond...

I remember seeing him in a 6-man tag match on Raw back in 2007, where London did a running Shooting Star press right off the apron right into Shelton Benjamin who was standing on the floor.

If it looks too pretty, it looks fake. Why would you do a SSP in a real fight?

Ya, I have no idea if this was his intentional idea behind it, but I liked it for this reason. The problem with some aerial moves is that if they're too graceful, then just just look too soft and like a circus de soleil routine. I know you have to suspend your disbelief with this stuff, but it's just easier with say, Randy Savage driving his elbow down from the top v. Lanny Poffo's soft moonsault that looked like it wouldn't squash a bug. The latter was probably more impressive physically, but Savage's elbow works so much better in a wrestling match.

No offense, but I don't buy that Kidman's SSP looked bad on purpose "for greater impact" at all. Especially since as pointed out in this thread, he injured himself and several others doing it.

Making a move look more impactful is all well and good, until people start getting seriously injured.

Wasn't Kidman's horrid SSP one of the reasons why aerial moves were banned?

Wasn't Kidman's horrid SSP one of the reasons why aerial moves were banned? Yes. Evan Bourne had to do the move like 10 times in a row to show that he could use it as a move for safety reasons

Wasn't Kidman's horrid SSP one of the reasons why aerial moves were banned? Him and Juventud are the ones that got the SSP and 450 splash banned respectively because they continually injured people by doing them.

Yeah, I'll never forget him near killing Chavo with it or indie level botching it in WCW.

I think I remember reading that Mikey Whipwreck got hurt after Kidman did his SSP on him.
