Was one of the games as a Kid that made me want a SNES. What's everyone's opinion of the game?

One of the best games ever.
Although most of it's sequels have actually been better than it, and, unlike some sequels, actually gotten better as time has gone on, the first is still a great little nostalgia game.
I have it on my phone thanks to an emulator. Good times.

I have a GBA version with my DS that I play a lot. It's friggin' tough but it's great fun when you get first place. The original was before my time, and I was a Master System/Mega Drive guy anyway so I never played the original. The coin system never appeared on the N64/Gamecube/Wii as far as I know. It's a shame, it made it more tactical to unlock stuff.

My parents would joke about how kiddy the original game looked.
Never did with the sequels, just the first one.

It's a fun game, though I played it recently and while still fun I did miss some of the advancements from the sequels.

I loved that

I'd argue it was the start of the greatest spin off series in Video Game History.

It's hard as f*** in 150cc. It's the kind of game you really have to invest time in to get good at. Nobody I've played it with since release has enjoyed it for that reason. Personally, that's why I love it. Getting in first in any of the Special Cup courses in 150cc feels great. And with 50cc, it's fun to mess around and try and lap all the racers. There's a Bowser level you can even double lap some people in, if I'm not mistaken. It's the one with the long area and yellow speed boosts.
My favorite thing to do is screw over the guy in 2nd place. On the Mushroom Cup's final course, a well-placed banana on the speed ramp can cause the player behind you to spin out of control onto the lower track, which costs them a good chunk of time. That's also why I like this game as much as I do - yeah, it looks like hell now, but getting hit with an item as well as using an item on someone actually matters. The results don't get immediately retconned by someone getting coddled with power-ups afterwards.
They don't make games like that anymore. Know why I kick ass at Mega Man X and DKC? Because those games beat me up and forced me to get better on my own. Because I died and lost serious progress. That's not to say MK is now easy - it's not if you play online, that's for sure - I just think it that the, "oh god, please don't hit me with a red shell" feeling needs to come back. Whereas now I get the feeling of, "big deal, I'll just get a star next."
Sorry for the mini-rant, but I really enjoyed that challenge. Nintendo and the like still make challenging games, but they give people the option to take the easy road, and I can't say I care much for that.

I loved doing that! By far, it was the most hours I logged on any Mario Kart game(and maybe any game ever). Me and my buddies would play it for hours and hours. We played battle mode to death and we got to the point where we would race all the courses backwards and see who could finish 5 laps first. It was a blast.

Like many Mario games, I can see why it was so popular at the time and why it was so influential, but I think it hasn't aged very well.
It's still nice to see some of its tracks on the newer games, though.

It is still my favorite Mario Kart game. Personally, I think it has the best selection of characters who's traits are truly different.
